Undermountain L2, Chain puzzle not working.
« on: January 16, 2011, 10:10:56 am »

Attempting to play HotU. Finished getting the chains from Drow/goblin corpse/goblin chief/rakshasas, and put them in their slots. I got to use the puzzle, follow the color sequence and... nothing happens. It will say (roughly) "As far as you can tell, nothing happens at the moment.", but even when I complete the sequence, it won't open the door. Only when I pull a seventh chain does it summon the "you failed" red dragon hatchling.

The way I dealt last time was by editing my nwnplayer.ini file so that I could start at chapter 2, but sadly that doesn't bring Deekin with me. (And I do kind of want to beat the whole game straight through.) If there's a 'unlock door' or 'solve puzzle' cheat/hak/patch, I would dearly appreciate it.

Check my signature for an OCs walkthrough.
You could maybe read "Henchman solutions", sticky at the OC forum, by HipMaestro, for henchies questions.

Walkthroughs can be found, and I've already tried guides. No dice. As for the 'Henchmen walkthroughs', they don't seem to involve Deekin.

Maybe a stupid question but... is your game patched?

As far as I know, yes. Autopatcher did it's stuff, and all that. ( 'Update' button on the start menu.)

Go in the game and check which version of it you're running. Also my autopatcher said the game was ok, but then I discovered I had 1 more GB of files to download manually '-_-''

Just out of curiosity, when you pull the chains in the order that the center pool displays, do you hear a "ding" sound on each pull?  The order is always random and will likely change each time you play a new game.  Sometimes the same color will be set in the order 2 or 3 times in a row and be a bit difficult to discern depending on the camera angle.  (Hopefully, at this writing, you have solved it yourself and need no more of our input.)

I know of no way to get Deekin to spawn in Ch 2 without searching for the variable the designers used to do it, but I will poke around.  Maybe I will get lucky '<img'>

edit:  This is the hands-down, best walk-through I have found for all the NWN campaigns, expansions and Premium modules and is interactive to boot. (Apologies to jml for his comprehensive list if it is already there.)

My sound is broken. Haven't been bothered by it so far, but yeah, it makes that difficult. I'm fairly certain the puzzle is just broken; I pull the right number of chains, but nothing happens until I pull one more, and it decides I'm incorrect. (Whatever that last one is. I've tried them all.) Then it spawns the wyrmling red dragon.

Edit: Uh... 1.69.8109 is the listed version under the 'update' screen. Is that latest?

If I remember correctly, it is... maybe you have a corrupted game... have you tried to resume a previous save-file and then go to this puzzle from it?

This has happened on two separate play-throughs. Two different characters; I have tried numerous save files. Doesn't seem to affect it, sadly.

Oh, not sure if it's really related, but when I was playing through undrentide, the desert wind scimitar puzzle broke; one of the stone steles required to complete the puzzle vanished. I hope it's not related, because that would suggest my entire install is bugged, or something, but it seems worth tossing out there.

That would lead me to believe a simple click may not be registering the variable properly.  I have also had to re-click, on occasion, the proper one until I got the confirming "ding' sound. Playing NWN without sound is a challenge I would not personally want to attempt especially with the video problems of glaucoma oft times interfering with my enjoyment.

I suppose a re-install wouldn't hurt except your older saves may be corrupted since they hold the needed variables so would need to start new games. And just for the record, I've played HotU at least a half dozen times at v1.66 before upgrading to v1.69 with no noticeables differences in this campaign.

An alternative may be to just  leave your henchman in Waterdeep somewhere, "jump" to the next area using a console command and then set up a binding in the new level.  At least that would get your PC past the offensive puzzle.

Have faith. We will get you through the campaign '<img'>

Awesome. I was kind of worried there wouldn't be anyone left on the NWN1 forums. Glad that I'm not alone.

As for the puzzle, it does register the "Nothing happens at this time" for each pull in the play-by-play bar at the bottom of the interface. I'd be happy to cheat myself into area three (or the center of area one via binding,), but I simply don't know what the areas are called, and therefore can't teleport myself.

in the chat bar, type (3 separate commands,  press <Enter> after each):

## DebugMode 1
## dm_jumptopoint 95 75 q2c_undermountainlevel2
## DebugMode 0

If there are any variables set by completing the puzzle, hopefully they are not quest killers.  Otherwise, this will get you past the locked door.  The most important command of the three above is the last one... so be sure to turn debug mode off or it will adversely affect your game.  (Important: Console commands are case-sensitive.)

Then set a binding at/near that point, return to where you left your henchperson(s), re-enlist him/her and transport back to the "safe" zone on level 2 central.  Take note, that regardless of which hench(es) you select to party level 3 with, only Deekin will accompany you to the next chapter... so if you want him in the next chapter, set another binding (level 3 west) before you talk to Halaster, return to Waterdeep, hire Deekin and return for the completion of act 1.

Good luck with the rest of the campaign!

Thank you much. That seems to work. I'm down to level three. You know your stuff.

               @ Mockery

If I were you, I would first check on these "95 75 q2c_undermountainlevel2" coordinates.

Do you have any idea who this Hip Maestro is? You don't even know is true name but you're about to jump anywhere 'cause he told you so.

Well, for the records, "95 75 q2c_undermountainlevel2" is one of the known few locations for Hell, according to the "Hoover the FBI" best seller in the 60's.

Again, your call.

Always be aware of the bear.
