Here's a long-due prompt piece. Sorry for the lateness, but I've had exams. D: Starring my Sorceress/Red Dragon Disciple, Xelara.
Prompt - Voices"Alright, I think we should set up camp. I'm freezing my wings off here." Xelara said weakly.
As they all prepared camp, Valen had said nothing. He could hear Xelara saying something else to him and Deekin, but he couldn't listen. The voices - the whispers, the taunts of those devils in Cania - they were tormenting him again, boiling his tan'arri blood. Unlike Deekin and Xelara, he was not exhausted - and even if he was, the presence of the devils made it impossible for him to rest. He couldn't sleep - not while they were around. Not while he was in their territory. He tried to focus on helping his comrades, but the ancient voices of the devils were calling to his blood, making it impossible to ignore.
He suddenly found an icy hand suddenly grasp his shoulder. "Valen?! Valen! Are you alright?" Xelara said, a note of panic in her voice.
Valen said nothing as he turned away from her, ignoring her. She wouldn't understand. He felt terrible for doing this to her - but she would not let him leave even if he really desperately wanted to. And in a way, he did. He was a danger to them.
And yet - despite the little amount of time that they had spent together, he had enjoyed her company. Deekin's... not so much, but his childlike nature and optimism did - despite his protests - cheer him up, if only a little. (Though, of course, he would never show it to the kobold. That would be a cue to start that Doom Song again, and he had very little self-control as it was at this moment.)
But Xelara... she was a dear friend to him. She listened to him, helped him, laughed with him... they were the best of friends, though sometimes... Valen wondered whether there could've been something more. The thought wasn't unpleasant, after all... though the wings would've made things rather awkward. She was rather pretty, and they were most definitely close. But... no. He didn't think anything would happen with them. She didn't seem interested anyway. She didn't really flirt with him or anything... then again, he doubted she was the type.
It didn't matter. Regardless of their friendship, he couldn't just stay. He could hurt them next time a devil attacked them... he couldn't trust himself, and that was what truly frightened him.
"Valen!" Xelara grabbed his shoulder again, this time pulling the warrior back. "What's wrong with you?!"
What could he say? 'I am a danger to you all'? Xelara wouldn't believe that, even though it was true. But he might as well try.
"Xelara, the longer I stay here, the more likely I will hurt you all."
"You've said this before, and I don't think you will."
"You've said that before as well."
"That's because it's true. I know what this place does to you, Valen, but... I don't think that you're so inhuman that you could kill us. The demon is only a part of you. You are mostly human."
He had heard this argument before, but she didn't truly understand what this place did to him. She could not hear the calling of the blood wars. She may have the blood of a dragon, but it didn't compell her to kill the way his demonic blood did.
"I-"
"And anyway, we'd be worse off without you around. It's hard enough it being only the three of us in Cania, but without you, Deekin and I would be alone, and it would be tougher for us."
He could not think of an argument for that. But still... he sighed and turned back. "I'm sorry, Xel-"
"You don't need to apologise, Valen." Xelara smiled at him for a moment before blushing. "Now, wh-where'd I put my velox berries?" She said, rushing to her pack and scrabbling for the berries.
Valen smiled to himself grimly. He may be dooming them all by staying here but... he knew he would miss their company if he didn't.

The sad thing about this? Xelara DOES have feelings for Valen. She's too shy to do anything about it.
