The follow-up to my angst.
When Elizabeth awoke, she was alone. She sat up, rubbing her eyes and pulling the sheets around her. No one was in the room, and no trace of Valen remained. Except for two things sitting on the bedside table. A scrap of parchment was one, and she picked it up and read the quickly scrawled words.
Elizabeth,
I'm sorry. I shouldn't have stayed last night.
Please understand, I'm trying to keep you safe. Please don't come after me.
And please forgive me.
-Valen.She dumbly gaped at the note, unable to speak, unable to think, nearly unable to even breathe. Her eyes, wet with sudden tears, turned to the second object. Shakily, she picked it up and stared at it. The braided twine, decorated with the stone she'd found and etched their names into, the bracelet she'd given him after the party...he'd left it with her.
Maybe that nagging, cynical voice had been right.
Maybe he never did love her.
You don't abandon the people you love in the middle of the night.
She'd been victim to such things enough to know.
He never loved her.
She'd been a fool.
Ha! A fool indeed, the voice cackled.
You know the nature of tieflings and men, yet you allowed this one to decieve you! And for what? A pretty face? A nice backside? Foolish little girl. She closed her eyes, that little self-depricating voice growing louder.
Foolish. You don't deserve love. Every man you've ever cared for has left you just like this; in the middle of the night, after taking advantage of you!"N-no," she whispered. "Valen's d-different..."
How? Because he was nice enough to leave a note? He still took you. He still took you and left you. Just how the HELLS is he different from any other man you've been with? For that, Elizabeth had no answer. She lowered her head, staring at the wooden floor.
Break the bracelet."Wh-what?"
Break the bracelet. Destroy the symbol of your so-called 'love.' Destroy it, and be rid of him forever. Move on. When she hesitated, the voice grew more demanding.
BREAK IT, GIRL!She clenched her fist and raised it up in the air, ready to throw the bracelet on the ground with all her strength, to shatter the fragile stone...but she couldn't. With a sigh, she lowered her arm and slipped the bracelet onto her own wrist.
Weakling! the voice hissed.
"Leave me be."
You cannot even destroy a simple little rock! You unbelievable-"LEAVE ME BE!" she shouted angrily, standing to her feet, hands gripping the sheet around her tightly.
Hehehe...do not worry, dear. I will come back... And the voice retreated, leaving her completely alone.
Until the door suddenly opened again, revealing a worried-looking Rikardo.
"Liz? Is something wrong?" he asked, taking note of the fact that she was only wearing the sheet, she was crying, clutching a piece of parchment in her left hand.
"Y-yes." she murmured, glancing at Valen's note once again.
"Liz...are you okay?" he asked, tentive, as he walked forward and grabbed her gently by the shoulders.
"N-no, I'm not."
The aasimar's gaze turned to the paper, and he quickly read it. His grip on her shoulders tightened suddenly, and then he pulled away, charging for the door.
"Y-you won't find h-him, Rik." the girl called, making him stop in his tracks. "H-he's long g-gone."
"Then I'll search for him. And kill him. Then raise him. And kill him again." the aasimar turned to her. "Would you like to watch?"
Elizabeth laughed briefly. "Y-you're funny, Rik."
"No. I'm serious."
"N-no, you aren't. Y-you won't kill V-valen. H-he's your f-friend."
"Not any longer." Rikardo snarled to himself before storming out of the room.
