Heeeelp!! I'm at my wit's end
« on: December 09, 2010, 07:49:26 pm »

Alright, so I'm still in the first chapter of the game. I just passed the color puzzle on the bridge and went into Level 2 of Undermountain. Once you enter level 2 there is a scene and then you have the option to go forward or right.  Well the door that is a head of you is barred so you have to take the one on the right.  Well I found the secret door and went into that room already, then I left and opened the other door to the right and my game crashed.  There was no game error with it and the game didn't minimize, it just crashed.  I have updated the game, installed patches and tried reinstalling the game.  I have tried restarting my computer and updating my Video card..nothing has helped!! Does anyone have any suggestions?? 'Posted

Update: The game is still crashing, but I can walk around and go anything else but go through that one door, as soon as I open it, it crashes.  I'm not too computer Savy so I'm not totally sure where to find the specifics of my computer? Sorry guys, I'm not the techy of my family.'Posted

And it is still crashing? Sorry to ask, you didn't exactly clarify. What is your operating system and graphics card?

Once we begin to entertain crash diagnosing, you need to display your full specs since this has nothing to do specifically with HotU.  Sometimes cutscenes can freeze or crash your game (at least they have on this machine) so then I just reload a prior save and try again until I get past the trouble spot.  It's likely related to your graphics config but there are so many combos you'll need to reveal all the specs.

edit:  Also, we are all assuming that you are running a vanilla installation of 1.69 without anything custom in the override.  If this is NOT the case, please elaborate.

I have game crashes now and then because I use Windows 7  which came out long after this game.

The more info you can give the better we may help you.

I can't get this game to run on win 7, so that alone is impressive.

You should be able to right-click on your short-cut and choose..."Troubleshoot Compatibility" I believe is what it says. Not on my home computer atm and this one doesn't have Win 7, but it's either that exactly or very close.

With Windows 7, well I use the 32 bit version so I am not sure about the 64 bit version but I would think it would work as well, but you need to use your file explorer and find the files that launch the game. That would be any files that are executable or .exe must be set to run in window XP compatibility mode service pack 3. When you first start the game set the graphics to a low resolution and gradually increase it once the game is up and running that way you can determine what works on your system. If that does not work then you need to post system specs and probably need to post that kind of stuff in the NWN support forum.

I have 64 bit, and I've never got it to run, doing what you say to do or anything else. I installed XP on a piece of my harddrive specially to play it. Runs great on my partition.

i know this is two months old but i have some relivant input, im running win7 ultimate 64bit, nwn with both expansions installed, i am now just starting HotU and not quite to lvl 2of undermoutain as yet but i have it working. I have found the 'rundll (32)' for the 64bit version of 7 has a bad effect on my cpu and you can safely end that once u either get to the main menu ingame or to the launcher menu, another thing i found with the 64 bit version of win 7 is that i have to launch the launcher twice to get it to run (ending the first attempt before trying again) dont know if anyone here has that too but it might help some others trying to launch the game....

As for the initial problem for this thread you can get a read out of the specs of the computer (basic read outs that is) via the my computer properties (computer for seven) right click the my computer icon and click properties and it should give basic info for the computer and what it has.

Adding to the old thread, but I had problems running NWN on a Win7 machine.  Just like I have problems running any of my games on Win7.

For all games created when Win XP was standard and before Win7 came out, doing this usually helps:

1)  Left-click on the shortcut.

2)  Choose "Properties".

3)  Click the "Compatibility" tab.

4)  Check the box for "Run this program in compatibility mode for:"

5)  Underneath that there is a drop-down menu.  Choose "Windows XP Service Pack 3."

That solves most problems.  The only other problem I have is that certain cutscreens will not play visually (sound plays, no picture).  It's only a problem with the movie style cutscreens.  I have read that it may be caused by some  combination of Win7 and my widescreen monitor's graphics capabilities.  There are complicated fixes, but I just live with some audio-only cutscreens.
