Looking for DMing training.
« on: June 26, 2012, 08:36:26 pm »

I am just trying to get into DMing, and have tried fiddling it a bit on a Lan server with another PC, but I was wondering - Is there a server that has some cool DM Tools and that I could go on for practice? I am afraid I cannot offer much comitment, and have no actual online practice at DMing, so if your server is fragile (as in, certain things changing even slightly would ruin the entire game) then do not respond to this. Also, any decent tutorials on DMing would be good, and if someone could give me a tutorial on making DM Tools that would be great '<img'>.

So, if you can help with any of that, please post here so I can see. If you are willing to let me onto your server, but you would not like to share it on an open forum, feel free to message me. I would, however, prefer it if you would/could post it here so that others in my prediciment can go on it. If someone would start a server specially for training DMs, so only players who are ready for explosive and most likely random game play, that would be great!

Thanx in advance.

We do offer a DM Orientation Program that is tailored to our own server and systems. Our documentation and tools are extensive, the module over 1337 areas and stable, lag free. Note, this is not 'general training for DMs' as much as it is for people who want to DM on our server (as much of the material is geared to our unique systems). I know this might not fit your request - but as you say, it is good to post such opportunities for those who may be at that point in their NWNing.

Be well. Game on.

P.S. find our links including to our forum and wiki at our web site http://playnwn.com  PM me any requests to join our DM Orientation Program.

On the vault is an old training module that can be helpful:

               Cool, thanx.

Anything else would be great, but this'll be good for a starting point. I still wish their was some server which was meant for DMs to play around with - a HUGE palette of NPCs, Monsters, Items, etc but all hidden in the pallette ready for the DM to deploy... that would be epic.

There are many servers that are meant for DMs to play around with. I'd assert that every PW is made for that purpose. It is why I made my own module. Thats what its all about in my view. And DMs are the key ingredient in getting players excited about playing.

However in my experience a DM usually comes out of a server's player base. Are you interested in joining up with a particular project and joining the DM team? Or do you just need some help getting up to speed as a DM for friends?

If the later, I suggest DMing adventures for friends. Its a great way to learn. Or simply hosting an event on Neverwinter Connections. I did both of those to get my feet wet DMing before I wanted to commit to DMing at a PW.

Anyway... what are you interested in doing?

Thanks, sorry for not replying for a while. This is all great stuff, and I will think each thing over. I have tried DMing for friends, but currently only know 1 other person interested in NWN so harder than you'd think. Neverwinter Connections sounds promissing, but as mentioned below I can offer non or limited comitment (though I have heard mention of 24hr servers - I assume one guy doesn't just leave his PC running over night, so as long as these servers aren't using illegal means like hacking into the game files or something, instruction on how to set one up would deal with the comitment problem as if I were hosting I wouldn't even need to be there).

As for joining a DM team, I would like that but must mention two big drawbacks of having me on team:
  • I cannot comit to something. I can try to plan times I'm on, but if I have some chore I have to do or somewhere I have to go, that may get in the way. I generally try to avoid anything more than "maybe some time sunday evening maybe?"
  • I have never DMed properly, only light tinkering, so I might either be slower than the players and there by behind the game, or I might spontaniously decide to add a random orc were there isn't one. As I tinker in game-making and book writing I realise you cannot just have something there 'cause it looks epic - I wouldn't make an extra troll come and fight the player at an important plot point - but I haven't got used to the base creature's strength and may make something to-powerful appear and destroy the player (if so, I would probably just heal the player and kill then replace the creature, but it would be a bit wierd - a player dieng, coming back to life, and the Umber Troll suddenly is a Goblin, if you get me).
  • I have never been trained.
If you are willing to handle these problems I would love you join a DM team, or at least get a password for some non-to-fragile PW world!

(PS: Thanks for explaining PW worlds - I never understood what it meant before!'')
