Best roleplay persistent world nowadays?
« on: April 21, 2015, 04:17:14 pm »

I'm new to the entire persistent world thing but I've been wanting to play in one forever, any suggestions of a strong roleplay persistent world that is still up and running?

Hey!

I run Arenthyor and while we're small, we have excellent roleplay, DM interaction, and tons of cool features.  Our fun, friendly and welcoming community will get you settled in.  Check us out at arenthyor.com.  Happy to answer any questions either there or here.

Much will depend on your time zone, the genre you favor, whether or not you want something low magic or high magic. My signature has a link to my own place so you can glean more about us. If, there's a specific type of PW you'd like to try, let us know and I'm sure folks can offer more suggestions.

Would recommend reading the rules as well as the setting information regarding each roleplay persistent server, as some have reasonable [though fairly strict] ruling regarding some things. And it may be uncomfortable for you in one case, or even exactly what you're looking for. Those websites are definitely your best friend in regards to that.

Well I'm looking for a setting that has diverse human races and cultures, I'd like to play an Aasimar preferably a follower of one of the Egyptian religions. What would even be better (which I know may be a high impossibility) would be  a  setting/PE that allows me to rp an Aasimar that has his own god and that factors into my gm interactions and storyline.

Sounds like a Sigil or Planescape themed server would suit you, but I don't know of any that are still being hosted. Maybe others here do.

Howdy '<img'>

Well our server alangara is highly planescape minded, situated in its own demiplane withinn Aber Toril ( the planet where faerun and Thus the forgotten realms ) are situated. As such it is possible to RP anything you can imagine even from other Worlds such as warhammer that does indeed have hints and crossing over storylines to alangara, and we actually have a continent that is a demiplane bound to the Nordic mytholgy. Being Asimar there is also very plausible and in thread with the whoole setting that is aiming towards the player being Reborn semidivine beings after level 40.

The overwhelming problem however is the fact that we currently have basically no players and as such I therefore might suggest you simply use the playercount and try some of the well visited Worlds first to get a taste for RP, and a fair chance to do so every login. Alangara is PT not an viable option for that.

All this said it sounds like an interesting concept and best of luck with your endaveours, and have fun with it '<img'>

Friend Maquiame,

Argentum Regio supports many custom and unique RP-enhancing tools and systems. Argentum Regio supports a vast array of races and subraces (including aasimar), a custom pantheon (where priests get bonus powers based on currying divine favor and the nature of their diety), as well as FLYING, swimming, climbing, jumping, mounts, window use, tree use, squeezing thru tight openings and much more. We are all about enabling immersion and staying as close to D&D as NWN engine allows. The only hak used is CEP 2.1 or better. Be sure to run through the tutorial area (aka Noob U.) when you first join, to get there fast, just tell Haggis you want the 'PRACTICAL ENTRY'.

Hope to see you on the server.

We're currently reworking our Forgotten Realms based pw set in the Silver Marches. The general concept is that everyone can help build and evolve the server setting through their own actions, build their own maps - be it for others to enjoy, or to develop your own character. We have rather unique tooling for that - basically, you can build an area in the toolset, and drag and drop it for live updates of the server via a web interface. There's some automated area transition functionality for overland maps as well, though that needs to be manually done by DMs for now.

It's more of interest to builders and strict RPers in its current state - we're lacking a lot of common game systems yet such as automated crafting - but the server is online and available for RP, though with a consequently small playerbase at the time.

Being FR, the setting has some restrictions - but Aasimars with egyptian religion are easy in the FR, too - Mulhorand is a good home for that, they have egyptian deities and aasimar and tieflings there.

Check us out at silm.pw if you want.

The PW with the most planescape theme to it is Sigil Planar Legends. I like that PW, but as is typical it is not suited to everyone. Fester Pot and I have debated the merits of it for example. While I give it high marks, he is not as impressed.

Thank you all, honestly it doesn't have to be Sigil based. I quite enjoy the Planescape universe and setting but I am preferably just wanting to play in a setting that is more typical D&D world but one that allows more cultural variances for humans outside of the typical European tropes of the your typical D&D setting, meaning my darkskinned Aasimar won't seem odd or out of place for the server setting. I don't want to disturb anyone's immersion. Also I'm more so looking to play the traveling good Samaritan classic type of Aasimar so Sigil's more enclosed city environment isn't really what I'm looking for. I'd like to be out and about in the countryside just saving people from monsters and such wandering around.

In a more open lore setting he would be a follower of what would be known as the God of Good Samaritans - The Great Father, basically your wandering Paladin that assists travelers, small villages and towns. The Great Father would be an NG god and Paladins of his order would take pilgrimages walking (or riding) the roads, narrow paths and trails of the world assisting travelers. Every place they would help they end up tying a golden scarf around a nearby tree, signpost, etc to the town indicating that area of habitation is under their protection. Your classic wandering hero/good samaritan trope but a gold flecked darkskinned Aasimar who wanders the roads singing or humming as he makes his way around the world on his pilgrimage. (Imagine the opening with Gandalf singing as he made his way into the Hobbit village in the first LOTR movie)

Your average Paladin of the "Order of the Wandering Hero" would look somewhat disheveled from constantly traveling, wear a gold scarf somewhere on their body and are not allowed to cut their facial hair or hair on their heads - an indicator of how long their pilgrimage is. Long ponytails, dreadlocks, etc would be the norm for these guys/ladies. Only after their pilgrimages are over and they have retired may they cut their hair (Their locks are preserved and kept in the Order's Hall of Wandering Heroes). Rangers would also be a part of this order and many of the Paladins would be mistaken more for a Ranger than your typical Paladin.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions! Such a warm community!

With those ideas I really recommend an FR setting, no matter the server - possibly a mulhorandi aasimar worshipping Hathor.

There's a couple of those around aside our own - Cormyr, Thay, Easting Reach... Thay would be the closest geographically, though Mulhorandi aren't welcome there much, by setting. Might need to check that first.

Hathor wouldn't be what I was looking for, but I am liking how Turmish and the Turami people are being portrayed in 5e. Know of any 5e rp PW's?

Not that I know of.

Bear in mind that 5E is relatively new, and many FR fans pretty much turned away after the Sellplague debacle. That and the rules difference will probably make 4E+ PWs rather sparse.
