New player - Multiplayer question
« on: February 22, 2015, 09:38:52 am »

A friend and I are considering delving into NWN territory. I've found the server list via Xfire, seems to work. I have a few questions though:

When logging in with a character, NWN automatically checks with a Master Server list and reports it can't connect. What about the character data then, will it be saved or do we have to start from scratch each time?

We haven't played the game before, and we want to co-op as much as possible, play through all the standard campaigns, DLC's, and then go online to explore all the persistent worlds and modules.

Is all this possible? Or is some content only single player? And I guess one of us has to host in order to play through the campaigns together, without others entering?

Hi MediaCult, welcome to the forum. I think you and your friend would find NWN enjoyable and NWN Diamond is ridiculously cheap at some online outlets. To try and answer some of your questions using my limited technical knowledge::

- Character information on privately hosted sessions and on Persistent Worlds is saved and stored. It will be available when next you log on. Someone else can likely explain better than I can, but essentially there are "server vault" characters (details stored by the host/server), and "local vault" characters (details stored on the player's computer after using the "save character" command). Most Persistent World multiplayer environments are "server vault".

- Yes, you can play multiplayer through the official campaigns and a lot of the additional modules. Some of these will be optimised for multiplayer play (e.g. the difficulty of enemy spawns will vary depending on the composition of your party) and others will not (and may therefore be tailored more for single player experience). If you are downloading modules via the NWN Vault (or whatever it is these days) it should specify how many players it is suitable for or whether it is single player only.

- And finally, yes, if you want to do multiplayer and aren't playing on a persistent world or on a Local Area Network then one of you will need to host. This is fairly routine and the server can be password protected so that just the host and those they invite can join in. Some knuckledraggers like myself can struggle with issues to do with firewalls and so on, but most people don't seem to have that problem, and if either of you are remotely computer literate you should be fine.

Have fun!

PS - If I've got anything above wrong, could some kind soul come and correct me! '<img'>

All the Master Server did was try to prevent the same CD key being used by more than one person, basically.  Since it is no longer active, you no longer need a unique CD key to do multiplayer unless the host has set up something to check CD keys.  Incidentally, every PW I know of has a system set up to check CD keys for that exact reason, which basically means that if you ever want to play on PWs you'll need unique CD keys and it won't matter otherwise.

Character data has always been saved on either the hosting computer (in a "server vault" -- meaning only characters created on that server can be used) or on the player's computer (in a "local vault" -- meaning you can use any character saved in the local vault in any module that allows local vault characters, so you can transfer them between campaigns).  If that sounds a bit weird, all you need to know for now is that you can each save your character data on your own computer and use it for your campaigns -- but if you play on a server you'll only be able to play characters made on that server.

All three official campaigns will work in multiplayer.  There are also many custom campaigns that work well in multiplayer.  I would highly recommend the Aielund Saga for that as a good first custom campaign (it's one of the best if not the best campaigns overall -- better than the three official ones).  Mines of Twin Summit is also good (but starts at higher level which isn't good for someone new to the game).  The Penultima/Penultima Rerolled/Eternum series works in multiplayer but those are also mainly story based modules with little combat, so being single player versus multiplayer won't really matter.  I'm sure others may be able to recommend some other modules that work well in multiplayer.

And then obviously there are a lot of modules that are amazing but only work for single player.  You might find some of the information in this post helpful.

And I guess one of us has to host in order to play through the campaigns together, without others entering?

SOMEONE has to host every module, period.  You'll probably want to configure a static IP and set up either a DMZ (simpler) or Port Forwarding (harder but technically more secure...but unless you think you're a prime hacking target it shouldn't matter).

Gold star from me!

Don't forget to give props to the person who made this possible. If it wasn't for Funky, I truly believe NWN multiplayer would be dead (or at least 99% so except for servers that allow local vaults) after the loss of the Master Server. Perhaps some others would have steped forward, but it's the gold, and universal standard, and the only one available to servers in the public domain.

Thanks again to you Funky, where ever you are. We miss you, and hope you are on to bigger and better things.

And for other PW owners interested... look here:

Yes, Funky did excellent work and we owe him a huge thank you for his efforts.  That said, other people have put in a lot of effort with things like the server lists or NWNCX.

Is Funky no longer working on Higher Ground, then?  Last I heard he was still involved in that.
