What is the most difficult thing for a PW?

               To me it is maintaining both their integrity, and the integrity of their mods. No doubt, building, and scripting are difficult, and require a certain level of technical expertise. But being able to make the hard choices and do what is right for the mod, and being transparent to your player base, seems to be the hardest from my perspective as a PW owner. It’s not easy. I think however true players recognize this, and respect this, and it is those that I consider true NWNers.
 
What is the most difficult thing for some of you other PW owners out there? Any players have any input on this?

               I'm not sure this is exactly where you were going, but I've spent some time thinking about what is important to make a "successful" PW. I call these my "7 Habits of a Highly Successful PW"

1) Differentiation: Beyond the world's 'story', this is the aspect(s) of a PW that are unique to it and set it apart from other worlds. In the best cases, these unique aspects/systems are integral to the world story.

2) Game Theory: This is the effective use of good RPG theory about the common play styles of players (explorers, achievers, killers, and socializers) and how to motivate and engage each of them in your world

3) Balance and Challenge: This is the delicate balance of encounter difficulty, rewards, and the economy (gold faucets and drains).

4) Quality: This is the "seamless" experience that a player has. It includes lag and the custom rules/changes that a world has made that enhance a player's ability to interact with the world.

5) Player Control & Creativity: Players love to influence their characters and the world. This includes things like opportunities to change their physical appearance or armor. It also includes the opportunity for them to feel like they are part of the world (languages, custom tools, personalized quests, guilds, faction leadership, etc...).

6) Evolution: Adding and refreshing content to keep the world current

7) Ease of Entry: The ease with which new players can join and become integrated into the server. Included in this is the use of haks, a server website/forums, or the openness of the playerbase to new people.

While all are important, to me, the most important and hardest is #1: Differentiation. In today's world of a mature NWN environment, it is not enough to have just another Forgotten Realms server. There are dozens of them. PW owners must have a vision for their server that is new and unique.

For example, In Arenthyor, I believe that differentiation stems from 2 sources: Challenging Replayability and Destiny
1) Challenging Replayability: Our party-based custom randomized dungeon system, which is integrated into our quest system and affects the PCs and the world
2) Destiny: The Fates and a player's destiny are key focal points in the game. Our Destiny system blends roleplay and the mechanics of building a character.

Why is Differentiation the hardest? Because once you choose those elements that you feel are differentiating, you must hold fast to them and be faithful to them as you build your world. You can no longer be a little of everything to everyone. Those players who are attracted to those same differentiating factors will enjoy your world, while those who don't value those factors will not become long-term players.

Anyway, that's my perspective.

               I agree with everything you said, BelowTheBelt.

Differentiation, as you put it, is extremely difficult to achieve in that you need to acknowledge and accept the fact that everyone who walks into your world isn't going to be a fan. And its often difficult to stand firm and say, "No, we don't have half-dragns here and we never will" or "Nope, the level cap on THIS server is 20 we don't do epic play" even if it means some people will storm out of your server on discovering this. Ultimately, though, developing a particular brand for your server - a unique flavor people can't get anywhere else is absolutely essential but extremely challenging.

Time.  Specifically, the lack of it.

There are only 24 hours in a day, and getting the most out of my time each day is a challenge.  I average 4-5 hours of sleep per night.

On the non-NWN side, I'm a stay at home dad with four young kids.  Then there's the wife that also needs my time.

NWN (and any other "leisure" like reading, tv, Black Ops, etc.) gets my attention after the entire family is asleep.

For NWN, I currently manage several "jobs":
- neverwinternights.info - mostly done building this one, so it's very little time these days
- the Custom Content Challenge - I've pretty much taken over right now, so managing that takes time
- my PW - which has multiple time costs:
- - - I sometimes play for 30-60 minutes (about once every week or so)
- - - player interactions (forum, toolset, in-game)
- - - problem solving
- - - building/scripting (new stuff + bugfixing + updates)
- - - custom content - always making new things for my PW, almost monthly hak updates
- - - server maintenance - my server is in my house, not hosted elsewhere

So yeah, time is the most difficult thing for me as a PW owner.

Don't know if the following might sound a bit grim, but I think these are some lessons I had to learn and things I've struggled with:

1) Not burning out.
2) Building a solid DM & dev team.  When this goes well it helps with 1) and conversely when it goes poorly.
3) Getting inspired to build new things after X years of building, especially without haks.
4) Realizing that "balance" is largely a hobgoblin.  In fact, I'm not sure I'd trust an action PW owner that didn't loathe hearing the word. '<img'>
5) Accepting that the reason people play one's PW might be wholly at odds with what one envisioned making.

               I wholeheartedly agree with all of these things. PWs are really special and unique projects that involve incredible amounts of time, creativity, skill, dedication, and perseverance.

I would add to this, cultivating a good community and player base, and working with them to continually provide challange, reward, and most importantly fun while still maintaining, in the words of Gifford Pinchot:

 "Where conflicting interests must be reconciled, the question shall always be answered from the standpoint of the greatest good of the greatest number in the long run."

               None of these things are an easy task, for PW developers, nor for players to stay enganged. It's one of the amazing things about the NWN community... we all as players (or most of us anyways after all these years), strive for the best build or mod possible (regardless of action vs RP, or story... player or dev), and yet reconize that we would all (or most of us anyways, and those are the true NWNers IMO) like to play on a level playing field, where all viable builds (given the circumstance of the PW you are playing on) are equal in the long run.

               Not forgetting that driving is as equally important and time consuming as being under the hood. The added time needed to 'play' in order to iron out any issues/exploits that may creep up is always my immediate speed bump.
