IP Viewing
« on: December 19, 2011, 09:46:04 pm »

I play on a persistant world and the ability for DMs to view IPs has become a concern to several players because of the idea that can be used to hak into their computers and such and they have been told that Bioware disabled the function but some aren't convinced. I tried doing some research on this but I haven't had much luck and was wondering if anyone knew where I can find some solid information on this subject or if anyone knew wether or not there is in fact a way for IPs to be viewed and if so, how it can be disabled so it isn't a concern anymore.

I myself would like to make sure everyone's personal information is secure so they can go back to enjoying themselves on the server with no worry that DMs are looking at their IP addresses.

Thanks

I'm not sure if they disabled that or not.
I will say that every website that you have ever looked at has your IP.
Every blogger. Every single employee, work from home corporation with a logo. They all have your IP.
Can people use the IP to attack you? Well, yes but not very well. The basic IP attacks almost never get through even basic firewalls. They can DDoS you, but that's pointless for a basic home connection... This is why everyone depends on phishing attacks to get in.
When the players surf to the servers website forums, the server admin has your IP anyway.
Not an issue.

It has not been disabled, and it never will be disabled. DMs are server admins. As server admins we need to use player IPs to ban troublesome players from the server. Any time you connect to my server I can see your IP even without using the NWN server client.

People worrying about sharing their IP with server admins must stop online gaming completely. It's simply not an option for you. If you are going to use an internet connection to connect to ANY kind of server, be it a game, a website, a voip service, an instant messenger, or anything else that server is going to get your IP. Period. End of line.

And BTW... in order to connect to our server guess what we give you? OUR IP ADDRESS.

To think that protecting your IP address is in any way protecting your security is just naive and pressing it as an issue just says you really don't understand what you're talking about.

IPs can be gained from most Emails, Forums Registrations and tons of other means already. NWN doesn't add to the risks in anyway. Even the CD Keys that a DM can "see" IG aren't the actual keys a player uses and of little use other than for banning. (I.e., I can't use recored Keys to play elsewhere as what I see isn't the actual key the game checks)

If you did manage to block your IP to where the server could not see it, You would disconnect your self from the server.  I guess the main point is,  If you distrust the DM's and servr that much, Dont play there reguardless of wether the threat is real or not.    It is just a game after all.

If you are that paranoid, you might as well disconnect your computer from the internet while you are at it.

The best thing you can do to protect yourself, is limit the information you give them.  If you require a forums login, make sure the information contained in minimal, and use an address that is not your primary email address.

At the very minimum any reputable server will have your IP address, your public CDKey, and the port you're using to log in.

With the authentication server being down you may be asked for some additional information to verify it is you trying to log into your account.  Systems will vary from server to server, anything from an encrypted password, to simply locking accounts based on public CDkeys.
