Any active sandbox PW's out there?
« on: December 01, 2011, 09:53:34 pm »

I've been playing Isandor for a long time back in the days. And during the summer of 2010 i hosted a spinnoff project called Freescape witch had some succes for a few months before i got too busy with school and general life.

Now i've suddenly gotten a lot of free time on my hands and i'm considering getting back to participating in and possibly help building a new Sandbox world. Is there anything remotely isandor-like out there for the time being or do i have to start something up again?

With a sand-box PW i mean a world where the players create the content and society instead of a theme park with pre-scripted quests and NPC's.

Doesn't that include most PW's?

To some extent sandbox play has been with NWN for a long time. This usually consisted in builders and admins simply listening to the players and/or letting players use some system to more or less choose what is built (a system where they can build houses for some gold or whatever...).

In the case of NWN this is a bit far fetched though. The building process is far too complicated. Just comparing with Minecraft for example where you quite simply can alter things...however Minecraft is not an RPG....not in in the real sense anyway...

About sandbox in general I think, I might be old school, but you CAN'T let the players build the world in (not 100%) an RPG. This is possible in games like Second Life...but not in an RPG...which have a lot more complications to consider and playability for ALL players.

What I am saying is.....sandbox yes...but for RPG games it needs to be very restricted....

Some things like altering and/or crafting your own gear is to some extent already avaliable in NWN.

Either through the default game engine or through scripting systems....

Even that sometimes goes too far in my oppinion and you constantly log in to servers where players choose to look like...well I'll leave it to your imagination...

Cablefish, sorry for not really answering your question. I don't know if there are any servers out there currently that go far into the sandbox....I just know that it might be hard to do....

Honestly don't know any that allow that for the whole module...

On World Serpent Inn we allowed that partly with our Underdark area (Players were going to design and build the drow houses) and Sigil (which is largely player...and one DM's help built). The only exception to that being shops and their wares which we cover ourselves since I'm sure players would love to slip permahaste weapons into loot and shops given the chance heh.

There have been successful sandbox PW's that's been quite a lot more sandbox than what you describe. However they do require a higher DM - player ratio. Worlds like Isandor and Freescape had no quests or NPC's and people seemed to have a lot of fun there anyway. Some of the zombie survival modules have the same sandbox mechanics and they have a very stable playerbase.

However there might be something to your point that it might be more freedom than some players can handle however i haven't given up and NWN has some of the greatest and most serious players out there.

ArgentumRegio often moves on the requests / desires of PLAYERS - it includes many systems intended to enable the PC and free up the DM to tend to 'higher order tasks' that enhance a game. We have accepted many PLAYER and DM built areas into our module and continue to roll out new (utterly amazing) tools and scripted systems.

1300+ areas, no lag, no crash, no jive.

66.232.100.90 cep2.1 or greater. Come see why your fav class/race is just better here.

I know we don't fall under the definition of "active," but The Border Kingdoms is under development.

We are designed from the beginning to be a sandbox.

Here's a link to a thread outlining some of our features:
