Newby newby newb noob seeking PW
« on: August 04, 2010, 11:49:25 pm »

Hey, I'm a total noob. Just installed the game, just started playing, etc. etc.

Anyway, the idea of a PW interests me hugely and I wanna try one '<img'>

First off, though: I'm running the vanilla game, no expansions (though I could probably find those if necessary) and am downloading the vital 1.69 patch right now.

I'm a noob, if I haven't mentioned that '<img'>

What I'm looking for:

HnS: Not ridiculous, though I can imagine big battles are fun, clicking buttons endlessly ain't ':police:'

Roleplay: Medium-Heavy. I've done a lot of roleplay and I love making stories with other people '<img'>

So yeah, any good ads? Don't have xfire or gamespy but will probably get xfire if I need to.

PS one last thing...do the players really have an effect on the world? Because so far, skimming around, the only "effects" i see are that they kill big monsters. Again and again and again. This doesn't seem too much like an ever-evolving, always forward-moving world :/

When I think "Persistent World"...I think of politics...factions...allies and enemies...stuff that will happen that will shape the way we play the game and tell the story for agessssssssssss.

Just my thoughts. So.
Any offers?

               You need the expansions. Also I would suggest the CEP Hak which is free and can be downloaded from the vault here;

http://nwvault.ign.com/cep/

More than welcome to follow the White Rabbit and see what is on our forum if we intrest you.

I second the CEP hak, and running the CEP updater program so you're on v2.3

The server I help with might be one you'd like. We specifically change the mod according to what players do, be it in a big plot... or just carving your name on a tree. We're rp focused.. but we don't punish people for grinding spawns either. We're set in Forgotten Realms, The Vast... but we offer planewalking to places like Sigil or the Beastlands.  See my siggy info if you're interested. Good luck, and welcome to NWN. It's addicted many of us for years, hope you enjoy it just as much.

Pretty much every PW uses the expansions at this point.  There are quite a few good and potentially good servers out there, but you really do need the expansions.

Other than that, it really depends on what you want in a server.  Both TSM and WSI (the two servers suggested thus far) are quality places.  It's really a question of preference.

Yes...risking starting to get repetetive here you need the "whole" game. That is the game with both its expansions. It isn't too expensive. Check Amazon for example.

Then also update it to the latest version.

Then install the latest version of CEP. (Not a must actually. most of the servers that I recomend in my list on my NWN1 page on X-Fire do actually not use CEP. Personally I would recomend you going through the hastle of getting that too.)

As I mentioned in the other thread I am willing to help you out in real time through a chat or similar, if you contact me. Beware though...that i'm on Euro timezone...

It is funny...that despite claiming you're a "n00b" you are actually asking one of the most advanced questions.

About the world changing...well yes...of course...that is a reason to play the game right there. A DM can in-game change pretty much. He can remove NPC's, add, control monsters, burn villages, flood cities and much much more...you probably won't get this in an MMO. All of theese are however things that will "reset" when the server does...so at some point, the game can continue as usual.

Also over the long run even larger changes can be made...only builders need to be careful not to break the most vital and most important parts of the world of course. It is more easy to just remove a city and the surrounding areas than to make a starting city with all that. We are talking many many hours. Remember this is a "free" game. I mean the people working on the server are not paid work force. It is people like you and me doing this in their free time.

So...it depends what server you are playing at really.

Personally I don't really need a massive rebuilding of the world at all times. If you look around you in real life you will notice that the world isn't really changing at an alarming pace...

About doing things again and again. I think one fundamental part of an RPG is the player characters ability to "level up" or gain abilities over time. This is a common question on many MMO forums. Players are so afraid of that they will be "grinding". What I want to say is that for you to be able to reach the highest levels and get the best gear there HAS to be some kind of repetition.

Yes...I agree that there needs to be variation on what you are doing...but if you look at it...you are really killing monsters. However...they can be big, small, dumb, intelligent, magical, non-magical, single, multiple, hiding in a cave, chasing you around in the city and much more.

I don't however understand people who ask this element to be removed totally. Usually this is people who also want to remove the time aspect all together....basically giving you max level and all the best gear on logging in to the server. How fun is that? Leveling up/gaining abilites is one of the biggest drives in the game and it cannot be removed (if it isn't an Arena server of course...which is a completely different thing).

Personally I dont think this "leveling up" should be made too easy or too hard. That is called the "balance" of the game...and as I mentioned it is one the biggest drives in the game...so it would be wise to keep it for a reasanoble time. Also gear is another drive.

Yes...let us not forget stories and roleplaying now. They can definately also be a drive. For me personally though your PC's advancement is still the mayor part. Sure...there are servers where you are just sitting around a campfire in town and just discussing who will be the next mayor. Then perhaps you have an ellection and so on.

Personally I think that goes on the virge of social playing (and not roleplaying) so I tend to shy it. Also sometimes very "hard core" roleplaying server that really make a statement about controlling everything and "pretending" to have eliminated "powergaming" actually have just supressed it or "hidden" it.

As usual...being in the middle is good I think. What the middle is varies from player to player. The servers I have listed on the X-Fire page range from middle to hard-core roleplaying....

Sorry for the long rant like explanation....but you asked :-P

No there does not. Many servers have different variances on ways of gaining XP and those who limit themselves to ONLY killing monsters really limit their base. Traps, exploring xp, crafting xp, Timed, Player Given, RP Rewards, Quest rewards, and a host of other XP Awards can be delevired by a server besides JUST combat XP.

Disagree totally. Gear and levels should mean nothing but RP Tools. We added in an Item Breaking System. We lost tow players over it and gained 5 so there is more out there looking for rwalism and less emphasis on gera than you stated. Remember this is your views though you lay them down here with these grandoise statements that they are shared by the whole Community which we both know yours, mine, and sone guy named Bob and a girl named Betty all have different views.

This one was better as you stated for you personally.

And yes there are some servers where people do sit around in a tavern and shoot the bull for an hour or so discussing all manners of things in the Realms. Nothing wrong with that at all. Matter of fact, when a player base can sit around and talk like that and totally immerse themselves it is neat in my book. It means they have spent enough time fleshing thier PC out that going to a lecture on magic by anothe rmage they actually gained xp listening. These things are possible without resorting to doing LAPS in a Goblion Cave.

Personally I think that goes on the virge of social playing (and not roleplaying) so I tend to shy it.

Social servers are not in this vein at all. Social Servers are more for...ahem...fetish SPECIAL type servers that cater to something different completly.

As usual...being in the middle is good I think. What the middle is varies from player to player. Sorry for the long rant like explanation....but you asked

To illustrate some of what I said there was gentleman here who said at one point;

The less we think of NWN  as a rule-based game, and the more we think of it as a game-based story, the better.

Which I agree with completly. This can best be understood by putting yourself in the view of a main character of a book.  If the main character spent the first 10 chapters killing goblins in the same goblin cave over and over and over, selling his goods, upgrading his gear, and then returning back to the same goblin cave to repeat the endeavor, you would quickly look for another book, wouldn't you?

If Thain is still up and around, 'tis a good spot to get your PW feet wet.

Have you played both social and rp servers? I can't say I know of many people that would agree that roleplaying around a fireplace, just talking, is not a common or acceptable activity on an RP server.

RP server = sometimes sitting around a fire gossiping about npcs and players, and events. Social server = Talking around a fire (sometimes) + weird kinky stuff in the bedroom afterwards.

I'd have no problem with a character who only "Rped around a fireplace."  I've never witnessed it myself, but it's fine with me, in theory.

I've made characters who actively discouraged other people from "adventuring," but that typically led to more adventuring than not.  Still didn't go over well with some people, however.
