I (whoops!) accidentally hit the "save and compile" button after I deleted a bunch of lines from the default9 script - i tried to reinstall the game, but it didn't load in the original script.

If it was done in a module, you just have to delete the script you changed from within the module itself and it'll go back to using the default one automatically.

Naw it just kept popping the screwed-up ones back in. I finally figured out to start a new mod and copy them over. THanks anyway.

You don't need to do this. Just do as Bard said. All you need to do is delete the script. You can never overwrite a default script. When you change a default script it automatically makes a new copy that sits in your modules list of scripts, with the same name. But the real default one is still tucked away safely in some secret place.
When you delete the version that you made or changed, that real default one takes back over it's original job.

So if you ever mess up one of the defaults when changing them, just delete them.

Delete them exactly how? i'm right-clicking on it and choosing delete from the dropdown list - it seems to work but then the new one is the one i screwed up - i'm using v1.10 without expansion pack.

With you module open, just look to the left where it shows areas, conversations and scripts. Expand your scripts and look for the override version that you messed up. Left click it and click remove, then yes, and then yes again. It will be removed. You can then put the default back in wherever you needed it.

sertiously why would anyone use version 1.1 these days. you will lack so many things and you will have a hell of a work to get community stuff aswell to work with it.

I tried to download the update on the intro screen but it gave me an error.

That is because the update from the main screen has not worked for a long time.
You would have to download the critical Rebuild.
