problem rendering icons
« on: November 26, 2015, 01:59:32 am »

hi

i'm making some icons to go with some new items, and i'm running into a bizarre problem i can't figure out. for some reason, the icons aren't rendering correctly in-game. they're rendering fine in the toolset, and look exactly like what i've worked up in photoshop, but the actual in-game icons are 'missing' some parts.

here is an example. the image on the left is a screenshot of the icon as displayed in the toolset. the on the right is what i see in the game.

as you can see, the one in-game has portions of it 'truncated'...

what am i doing wrong ?

Upload the icon image to dropbox so someone can take a look - error is probably in the alpha channel or the size of the icon itself.

Just guessing, but it looks like the alpha channel may be a remnant of the image you exported and pasted the new one onto. It's giving opacity in the shape of the previous weapon head. Just a guess.

The thing is there is a slight difference in the way the toolset renders things compared to the way that the game itself does. In my experience this is most noticable in item icons and specifically to do with transparency (alpha). One of the things I have noticed is that when you create an icon, you must always leave a (at least) one pixel wide border of totally transparent pixels around your icon. Another is that the toolset will render nearly transparent pixels as transparent whereas in game they will show up as strange little dots that tend to be brighter than the background. I am guessing that yours is a related problem to this last.

There is an excellent free tool that I use to combat that problem. It is Greenfish Icon Editor Pro (aka GFIE). What I would suggest is that you grab this, if you don't already own a copy. Convert your image to png format and load it into GFIE and see if you can find any alpha related problems in there.

I hope that helps.

aha !  thanks for the clue, guys, that's exactly what's wrong. i thought i'd cleared the alpha channel to begin with, but i'm looking at it now and see that i definitely... didn't. '<img'>
