Appearance 2da - Height Field
« on: August 21, 2014, 05:53:39 pm »

What exactly does the Height Field in the Appearance 2da affect? Will changing it affect the models actual height or just the height at which placeables, doorways, etc... block the model?

The height field seems to change the camera height if you zoom all the way in. I try to set the height value so that when you zoom in on something, the camera ends up in a place where you can see the bust. It helps in taking a screen shot of the entire creature and centering the thing on the screen. If you set it to a value equal to a human on a 15 foot creature, when you zoom in, you will be crotch-gazing.

I don't know personally if it changes bounding box height, but that would certainly explain a few things. I thought the only bounding box issues were of x-y dimensions, not Z. But I would like to know too.

Edit:

It also influences head-look, on appearances with that enabled. They will look to the height value specified. I found that out in June while working on my crystal holder placeables. I set the height level to the exact value of the nook and they looked right at it every time I interact with the object. So it can be useful when defining where to look on creature-placeables.

Edit2:

That also means that the high and low close attacks will be selected by the height of the target.

I've recently had players whose PCs are Half Orcs get blocked from accessing a few transitions (doorways). This had never been an issue prior, but back in June I did a hak update which added an override to the standard cave interiors. The -large maw- cave entrance (with the overhanging teeth) nolonger allows Half Orcs to walk under it. I tested with a Half Orc DM Avatar ... and got stuck. I changed appearances to a dragon, bugbear, slaad, and some other large creatures and got through just fine. All of these appearances have a Height setting of 1 as apposed to the dynamic half orcs which are set as 2.25. Anything with a height of 2.0 or lower seems fine. Over 2.0 and the appearance gets stuck.

So my next question is ... does the Height Field only apply serverside or will I need players to redownload the hak after I change it serverside. I'll be testing this as a serverside only fix later this evening, but if someone knows for certain before then I'd appreciate knowing.

Made a quick serverside only change to a few of the height entries and seems to work just fine. Will report if I notice any other oddities.

thanks for this clarification... and i wondered why my first person view was always way to close to the torso-pelvis point and it seemed you look straigth out of the genitals...
