it would likely depend on the source of the model in question, but I would also suspect that WoW has something somewhere in the EULA that everything belongs to them regardless.  By 'source' I would mean who the actual creator was, not who stripped it from the game, but was the model in question actually created by a gamer that released it to public domain, or was the model created by WoW staff or licensees etc.  Most likely the true answer would be 'yes, it is illegal to upload to anywhere

.'

The best way is to dont talk to much about it and cover it up a lil bit... some PW´s did get away with that... they dont talked about the "content" that would be problematic if someone runs around like a town crier yelling about the ripped models...

But yes. I think almost every model is illegaly uploaded that was just ripped from another game.

Thats why it´s always a good idea to change the geometry at least a bit and the texture. That way it doesnt even look like it was just basically a copy and paste '<img'>

Technically, yes

Doesn't stop people from doing it

Long as you're not straight out porting the models complete with animations and aren't doing it for profit its unlikely they'll come down on you though. We did it for Warcraft 3 for years and nothing happened

Still, I'd probably try to be a little cautious about models that are too derivative. I don't think we would want a broadly applicable cease-and-desist letter to shut down the Vault or Nexus. '<img'>

Blizzard (unlike most other game companies who dont seem to care about modding) DOES actively pursue copyright violators via cease and desist orders.

regardless, if you uploaded and converted a model into nwn i doubt the invisible copyright police are going to come knocking at your door. If you planned on selling it as your leisure they'd find out really quickly. And at teh worst youd get a formal email saying that you might have to take it down.

There was an artcle i found a few weeks back related to copyright infringment on the modding community. If i find it ill post it here for reference. But basicaly it said that as long as you *create* the content yourself no one can claim copyright infriengment

Thats an interesting article, which I do not agree with.

And as far as legality goes, its debatable. It tends to be a question of whether or not you sell anything. If you aren't selling anything and it is not possible to demonstrate that the users of borrowed art are causing harm to the creator/owner then there is no problem.

Good luck establishing "harm".

As far as I am concerned - if the big companies want to crack down, then let them. But don't make it easy for them to win a case. Don't sell the stuff. Don't scream to the heavens that you have the stuff. Modify the stuff and make it your own if you can.

Make it hard for the bastards to ruin our fun.

I'd prefer to see credits on works derived from commercial properties (and on all community works, of course), because that empowers potential users to decide for themselves whether it's ethical or risky.

Giving credits to private people who do free stuff for communities is always the way to go. Asking them if they are ok with having their stuff used in NWN is also the best way. For commercial stuff the golden rule is "silence is golden" and if you are caught which i never experienced here for nwn for all these years then just cast hellfire meteor on the guys who caught you and cause eternal damnation upon them!

So when silence is golden this thread should be invisible from now on. What you dont know is what you dont think about '<img'>

EDIT:

the only communities who brag about content that comes straight from other games are the second life '(market place....) and the sims. Some of these people are realy what i call epic fails when it comes to respecting original authorship....

btw: iirc CD Project Red, the developers of the Witcher series activelly support modding communities. i think if you search around a bit, you will find a statement from them, that they are cool with their models being transfered to other games. i know lots of them have been ported to skyrim, and the community there is being very strict about copyright infringements.

so my suggestion is: look for witcher stuff if you want to prt other items to NWN

amen baba yaga-

second life is the worst when it comes to copyright infringments. its basicaly "lets google a texture image someone has done then sell it for $50"(j/k) sims isnt so bad, but as many versions of The Sims thats out there, im sure there is plenty of undisclosed content not made by its users.

I guess we kinda have that similar issue here in our community related to hackpacks and their origional authors. Many members here conclude it degrades or ruins the authorship since your putting it with other authors content without compensation or recognition. which i agree with, anyone with a  pw using haks should always recognize the authors that made it possible.

CD Project Red released their stuff for the modding community, because they are awesome. Here is the statement: http://forums.cdproj...ll=1#post876668
