3d modeling programs
« on: February 04, 2014, 04:37:16 am »

Just out of curiosity are there any other free 3D modeling
programs out there that I could use with NWN instead of  Blender & gmax?

I don't know about that, but I can tell you this. It might work (in case you really don't want to use the options already available to you, to model things) if you just modeled inside a different modeling program, then imported the models into gmax or blender, to THEN import it into NWN. So basically, do all the graphical work in a separate program, put it in gmax for the technical work and importing to NWN.

The way it is now, you can use any program that can export .obj file format which is the universal standard now days. So pretty much any program to do you work like dusty said, but you have to import that .obj file into nwmax or blender with nwn plugin to get your final model type and both programs support .obj import. Hope that helps.

Does GMax support FBX import? Blender will import FBX, but it does not export it as FBX is a closed format.

In my view, working with FBX is preferable to OBJ if you can get it working as it supports just about everything you will want to do.

Just checked my installed gmax for you.
I can import the following file extensions: .3ds / .prj / .dxf / .mdb / .gr2 / .obj / .shp
Of which the .mdb and .gr2 are facilitated by remainders of my NWN2 escapades.

Therefore, an out of the box gmax doesn't like .fbx files.
You could try to look for an fbx import plugin, I'm not sure if one of these is available on the net '<img'>

Thanks, Valthrendir. I don't use gmax much so it is helpful to have someone else weigh in there.

Blender does import FBX however.

3dsmax imports FBX, but I think gmax is lacking quite a few import options. Not really a surprise, being it's free and all.
