Creating Mini-maps
« on: December 27, 2013, 03:42:29 am »

While working on my tower project, instead of using the minimaps for Castle Interior 1 I wish to make properly colored ones for Castle Interior 2.  However, I seem to have a setting off, or something of that nature.  That...and I've never made a mini-map before.  '<img'>

Using Gmax, in both VelTools and NWmax there are buttons for creating mini-map images.  However, in both my situations the buttons are greyed out, and no amount of fiddling on my part is making them available.  I looked on The Harvest Moon consortium tutorials, but that did not speak of the issue I seem to have run into.  I can only assume there is a step I did not take, and neither tool will make itself available to me.

So, kind people...what simple step am I missing here?  '<img'>

The buttons are grayed out because gmax doesn't have some of the functionality needed for making the mini maps. You either need 3dmax with Veltools or Asymmetric's Neverblender and the mini map generator. Projects are read only now, but you may still be able to download them.
Files are here.

Ahh, that explains that, then.    I grabbed Assymetric's work, now to go to work so I can dl Blender; I'm sure that's too big to fit through my tiny internet connection.  '<img'>

Thanks you, Zwerkules.  '<img'>

Very well, I got it to work and created mini-maps. However, GIGO.  '<img'>

The texture difference is easy enough to fix I would think.  I simply had high-res textures in the folder; I will change those to low res and see the results.

The grey areas though I'm unsure of.  Is there a setting I am missing to render those in black?  I could just as easily edit the end result with a photo editor (there's only 12 maps), but I'm wondering if there is an automated way to do so.

To be honest, I am not positive that Veltools has the full feature set enabled, however, Vlemar's other tile-set related tool call "Tile Set Creator" or "TSC" and it should still be available on the vault.

Anyway, the mini-map option is a bit difficult to find in that tool, but if you load the proper .set file for whatever tile-set you are working with AND if you load the .set file from the same folder as the ENTIRE tile-set is located in, you will have multiple options, from changing size of the mini-map to how it handles the so called grey areas which are actually greyed out objects that have been set to"Fade".  I normally turn the Fade feature off within the TSC (making no changes to the actual tiles themselves, it is just a setting used by TSC) so that a true TOP-Down image is created, and if you have a tall tree with overhanging foliage, the ground underneath will not be visible.... as you wold expect to see if you were hovering over that tree in real life.

Ah, I'll take a look at that then and see if it produces different results.

Thanks for the tip, Bannor.  '<img'>

Updated previous post to provide a link for TSC By Velmar.  Truly a useful tool if you plan on doing major editing of a xxx.SET file, gives you the ability to set path nodes, visibility nodes etc, as well as major edits to the xxx.SET in general.  The only real fault that I have found is that it will NOT allow you to directly add a "Group" into the xxx.set, tiles are fine, as many as you wish, but the "Group" button was never finished.  You can delete Group entries, just not successfully add a new entry for a new group.

Any, now I am heading back into search mode for all the missing software on this newly installed win 8.1  Only marginally better that 8.0, but about all you can get anymore.  I sure would love to smack the crap out of whoever had the final say on the User Interface for 8.x as it is aimed at pc owners but designed to work with a small smart phone instead, and the friggin apps don't ever seem to have a "Close / Exit" option that I have been able to find...

I have 8.1.  What I did was install Classic Shell, and that made a world of difference for my sanity.  About those damn apps though, I found that if you take your cursor up to the upper left corner of your screen, you will see where a small window pops up and you can get to the desktop.  Click that and you get off the app page.  Do the same again, then right click the small window (which now shows your app) and you can close the app.  Or maybe this is only a function associated with Classic Shell, but I got away from the default interface about minute 5.  '<img'>

And I agree...I want to kick whoever designed this OS right in the short and curlies.  -.-

And a quick question; is TSC only for 3DS Max?  Or can it run in Gmax as well?
