Poly count too high?
« on: May 01, 2013, 01:15:33 am »

A figure I have been working on for NWN.  It is at 4526 quads. I hope it is not going to be too much for NWN.

What do you think? Should I go back and cut it down some?

Poly count too high?

Has anyone ever used a 10,000 tri figure in NWN before? I know its within the 2007 guide lines for NWN2, but just wondering if anyone here has used any figures that high before.

Well I read in the forums here that NWN does use weight mapping. So unless someone here tells me I am way over the limit I am going to go ahead and bone it and weight map it.

If I can get this figure up and running in NWN, I will post it for download.

cheers.

Yes and no. The CEP has some NWN2 buildings that approach and I think exceed that figure, including one building that hits 20k or so, if memory serves. Performancewise, however, it's absolute murder on caching. We refrain from using even high-poly horse models on HG, as they can eat up the graphics cache all by their lonesome.

               Thanks for the reply.

I was afraid it was likely too high. Dang! Well start over. How about half that size?

I think for a base model or a npc that you use a lot it´s very much. Some tilesets already lags a bit so + npcs, placeables and many scripts in one area I can see a problem.

I have used a 70,000 poly model in my module without too many problems: I had to split it up into 8k poly chunks to get the game to load it, but it didn't perform too bad. That said, there was only one of it, and it made up almost the entire area.

I'd be more worried that the art style will look totally out of place, personally. Nice work though.

Edit: apparently I underestimated my model's polycount : p
