G(NW)Max export issue
« on: March 17, 2013, 08:56:37 pm »

I am having issues with exporting from Gmax. I looked over tutorials for modelling I found to start with it but I am totally new to 3D modelling so I dont understand what is what etc and I am a bit lost in the studio (also probably because my monitor is so small so I see it differently than others.

ok, I installed gmax, then nwmax, then imported existing and working placeable model from Map Placeables hak. I can import it via NWMax MDL, I get a view of the placeable without textures probably because I havent exported them from hak, ok now I tried to export it just like that, no error shows up, gmax looks like its doing something and nothing gonna happen. The model files are not rewritten (path leads to import path) neither are created if I change path to the empty folder. No feedback, Im clueless.

'Imagepreview, click for enlarge

this is how I did that, maybe im doing it wrong? I also of course tried 'export geom only' and ncheck sanity checks but no change.

It should work for you if...
a) all the parts of the model are linked to the aurora base
'B)' you have just the aurora base selected and
c) you just go the route of Export Model & Anim from that right-side panel

               Hi again ShadoOoW,

Have you tried to right click on the small white text window in the lower left corner of the GMax screen ? This should open the listener window, or alternatively you can do that through the menu (Maxscript/Maxscript Listener) or directly with F11.

GMax is fairly bad at providing feedback, I agree, but otherwise rather user-friendly (it lets customize pretty much anything in the interface). The listener window should at least give you clues about what is going on, and it shouldn't be empty if an export is really going on.

PS : I will also reply to your PM.

@ShaDoOoW - Are you starting GMax by launching GMax.exe or NWMax.exe?  I don't recall off the top of my head whether or not you can load files if you just launched GMax by using the GMax.exe, but I do know that if you want to save them, you need to have started GMax by running NWMax.exe  That loads what is called a "listener", something which intercepts text from the GMax "listener" window and which is the thing actually responsible for writing out the model file.  NWMax should always be started (when using GMax, anyway) by running NWMax.exe.  Also, exporting the model using the interface on the right side of your screenshot (i.e. selecting the model base and then, on the modifier tab either exporting geom and animations or just geom) is the preferred method for working on individual models.

If the listener is active (which you can see if there's a small icon in your system tray that says NWx) and you exported using the method OTR described and you still don't get any files, it could be because you're running Windows Vista. The granting of write access of Vista is completely fubar IMO. Even if you installed gmax as user XYZ, you still have to give XYZ write access to the gmax dir and subdirs sometimes or you won't be able to export/save any files to those directories and to make things worse you don't even get a message that you're not allowed to access those directories.
So if you're running windows Vista, make sure you have write access to the directory gmax is trying to export the files to.

I was simply running GMax. When opening nwmax.exe it worked! Thanks all.
