Appearance.2da and Racialtype column
« on: February 05, 2012, 02:47:15 pm »

So what is the deal with the weird racialtype column in appearance.2da?

I figure the column means nothing. The numbers are certainly random. They do not appear to be consistent, and they don't correspond with racialtypes.2da.

I've ignored this column for a long time, but it bugs me and wondered if this knowledge is still in the "forum-mind". Anyone know? I've looked in the documentation of various places (NWNWiki, the handy dandy 2da reference, Google, NWN Lexicon)... I gathered no valuable intelligence.

I experimented with this quite a bit while working on NwnE. To the best of knowledge it does nothing. I came to the conclusion that it may have been a marker column that predated the racial type 2da and was never removed as the game evolved during development.

Furthermore, I emailed/PMd both Craig and Brian about it and neither one could provide any information (well, Craig didn't respond).

Thanks. That's what I figured too but it feels better to have some confirmation.

Thanks for the feedback. This just came up in my latest hak merge and it's useful to know it.

That makes sense, as once you start using an appearance for say both a bandit and a werewolf, for example, using the appearance alone to determine the racialtype becomes impossible.

Sounds like it's a free column that could be re-used for other data '<img'>

Carcerian... shoulda thought of that. The free column aspect. But instead of making use of it, i added eight columns to my appearances 2da It hasn't been a major hassle with merges so far. We'll see how upgrading to Q1.5 goes.

Thank you for that info!
