Fists or Forearms of Doom?? ...decisions ...decisions.
« on: December 16, 2011, 05:53:26 pm »

So, I just finished going through the NWN Vault looking for content to add flavor to my game.  One of the coolest things I've come to include in my game are Kurairyu's hands.  They add some pretty nice hands with fingers to replace the "fists of doom".  There are a few additions by other people that expand or improve on it and it really makes such a big difference to the aesthetic of the game.  If you play as a male or slender body-type female.  If you play as a large body-type female you are either left with the "fists of doom" or, if using one of the mods that extends the original hands mod, nice hands with fingers but "forearms of doom".

I always thought that the sort of people who were into D&D were higher-brow than most folk, but I have to say - after going through the custom content on the Vault I'm really disappointed.  The lack of love for large phenotype females smacks of male chauvinism.  In fact, the only custom content I recall coming across for large body-type females was one that added extra large bosoms.

I'll not disagree with you on the male chauvinism part.
However, I'll throw in a tech note on the "Normal Pheno Only" bit.
This is generally true of almost all of the custom animations/body parts on the vault.
It applies to both male and female.
If someone wanted to include their hands or custom combat anims or whatever for the large pheno as well, they would have to do a lot more work.
Since the vast majority of players play normal pheno, they generally don't bother.
You can use the normal pheno stuff on the large pheno, but it doesn't always look right.
I'm guessing the hand fix that you mention is just that. The normal pheno hands set to be used on the large pheno.

Yes, I have to agree. The amount of work it takes to bring animations to the large phenotypes is prohibitive.

BTW I fixed quite many large phenotype model issues in my Patch project plus gnome umberhulkish forearms and shins. And I also added kurairyu's hands with Pstemarie's update for hands added in 1.69 patch.

I don't have a screenshots but the large pheno model issues I'm talking about are:
- Patch 1.69 armor parts 68 not scaled onto large phenotype
- some parts impropertly scaled (mostly belts and foots)

It is not "smooth" and perfect, but definitely better than default. If you play large phenotypes a lot really consider my unofficial patch.

               ShaDoOoW:
Have you ever tried a large pheno with your patch to test the hands?
As far as I know, you use the same hands that Erinjas mentioned don't work on large pheno's.

Although, I will say that the patch looks like it fixes a lot of stuff in general, and I'd love to see it become a standard update in the community.
So, the other fixes make it worth it even if the large pheno hands still appear wrong.

Right I do as noone yet remaded kurairuy's on large pheno afaik (and I wasn't and still not able to do it myself). I didn't realized it when I posted here, but it is not a bug, neither my Patch improves hands then.

Still there is a lot other models fixes to make at least the worst deficiencies better.

I'll have to experiment with this a bit and see what transpires. I've been playing with animations quite a bit and it really shouldn't be anymore involved than just importing the animations into a large pheno base model then tweaking them a bit for clipping.

I'll have to look through my archive. I think I may have done a large pheno hand makeover for NWN Enhanced, but never released them.

Pstemarie, that'd be so awesome if you did.  Please post if you do.
