Use of CTP Tilesets
« on: January 04, 2011, 01:51:41 am »

This is a continuation of issues raised in this thread, which some posters thought were off-topic and would be better discussed elsewhere. Accordingly I have started a new thread.

One of the poster's in the previous thread raised the question as to what issues the unfortunate demise of CTP would raise for the use of CTP tilesets. This concerns me as well, since I have been spending a lot of time building a module making extensive use of the CTP Bablyon tileset, which, unlike the other CTP tilesets, has recently been removed from the CTP vault page and is no longer available for download. Obviously if I expect anyone else to be able to play my module when released, it will have to be made available in some form, by me as a module-specific hakpak if no other alternative presents itself. I assume given the positions adopted by some CTP members about use of their work that they would have problems with that.

Now before I am subjected to a lecture about content creators' alleged rights, let me first say that I do not want to do this, was perfectly happy to abide by CTP's stated terms of use until the CTP itself made it impossible to do so, and have no desire or intention to deny the makers of this content any of the credit due them (I would be perfectly happy to praise them to the skies for this remarkable tileset if called upon to do so). I have no desire to upset anyone by using their content in ways they would not be happy with. Finally, let me point out that for me personally the easiest way to handle this, by far, would have been to simply go ahead with a renamed hakpak or something incorporating the Bablyon content, without, most likely, anyone involved with CTP even knowing I had done so, since I am just one module author among many, and without there being much anyone could do about it anyway. This would have allowed me to avoid a potentially unpleasant argument and get on with my work. The fact that I am even posting this is, I hope, proof of my desire to come to some arrangement that would respect the wishes of the CTP team and its members, if that is at all possible.

As far as I can see, unfortunately, to fulfill some of the above desires, I would be expected to give up on years of my own work because a necessary component for it has been abruptly and arbitrarily removed. Am I really expected to tamely do this? Is there no amicable alternative that can be proposed?

Has it any point been suggested in the least that CTP's content will be removed from the vault? I see nowhere that it has. And if not, then I see no issue whatsoever.

Furthermore:

with the exception of Babylon, and CTP_Generic doors, I am releasing all rules from use/abuse of the content.  Babylon and the CTP_Generic doors are not mine to release from those licensing/re-use restrictions.

According to Rogueknight (and as I just confirmed by checking), CTP Babylon has been removed from the CTP's Vault page. Unless it's been made available somewhere else that I'm not aware of, it is, as he said, no longer available for download. Since Rogueknight has invested a great deal of time in building a substantive module project using it in good faith, his question appears to me to be both a reasonable and respectfully raised one. If I'd been using it in building Sanctum 3, I would be concerned as well.

For reference, here's a link to the Vault Custom Content Authorship Guidelines that Maximus and I wrote a couple of years ago. Point 5 in particular is intended to address these kinds of cases.

It has been removed? Goodness, I've made a bit of an daft comment there, then. I was just going off the lack of any post from Bannor himself regarding it, though I can see the implication in the subtext of his posts. Oh and thanks to the slew of people who just PM'ed me to inform me of that, too. You make me feel so much less silly '<img'>

That said I have heard rumour that the files may just be being relocated. But uh, I probably shouldn't tell people about that either ':bandit:'

As a representative of the CTP. I can say that Bannor will put it back on the vault. He took Babylon down to put it in its own entry. However there is a small problem with the FTP upload. Bannor is correcting that problem.

Babylon is not being placed somewhere else and It will be uploaded within its own Vault entry.

Thank you

               In Regards to Rpgmodding,

HarvestMoonConsortium is in the processes of potentially buying RPGmodding.

Harvestmoonconsortium is and organization that promotes game designers in general offers teaching to those that want to achieve various levels of game design be it ameture or professional, and offers guilds a small community to collaborate. We use at this time both Aurora and the Unreal engines.

RPG modding will find a good home with us.

HMC is owned by Myself, Bannor Bloodfist, and Mermut

I suggested putting two different sets of terms of use on the CTP Releases page, but Bannor pointed out that this would be confusing.  Accordingly, as Winter has said, we are setting up a separate Vault page for the items that are not being released from their original terms of use.  Sorry for the delay.  We hope the arrangement will suit everyone.  We put a lot of work into CTP Babylon and the last thing we want is to stop its intended users from having access to it.

Once the upload has been approved, it will be located here: CTP_Babylon.

Enough said.

Ok, I guess my distress was premature and there is no problem, then. No doubt it would have been confusing to have separate terms of use on the same page, but the remarks about Babylon currently on the CTP Release page are a bit confusing as well: they seemed to me to imply that it was gone for good. Perhaps you should update that to just have a link to the separate page.

I plan to, once the vault has approved everything and I have what I know is a valid link.  I wasn't able to post it prior to this as I did not know how long it would take to get things adjusted.

Just a note, the date/time stamp now contains a new date, but the actual hak file has NOT been changed in anyway, so there is no need to grab a new copy unless you need to.

Ah, a Vault upload delay issue. I should have guessed. Thanks for the clarification!

That is very good to hear. I hope it works out, and thanks!

I didn't know about that. It sounds like a good site to check out, especially since I'm planning to start trying to learn Unreal development as well.
