Forest Hills Plus2...would anyone still be interested?
« on: December 16, 2010, 04:50:50 am »

Long ago I came out with a forest tileset add-on where I integrated it with hills. It became Forest Hills (brilliant title I know, lol). Michael Darkangel and a fella named Sass were working on similar projects at the same time but using different  methods.  Anyways, Forest Hiills grew bigger with a bunch of great community stuff I threw in and became Forest Hills Plus.
Late '05 I started work on Forest Hills Plus2. By the time I was 95% done it had become a 65 MB Forest add-on monstrosity. I was working on editing and recolouring the mini-maps and then I put the project on hold. Since then, the most complete set of files I had became lost. Initially, I was going to resurrect this project back in early '09, but the copy I had only had about 60% of the content and none of the mini-maps had been edited. Those of you that have edited hundreds of mini-maps, know it's long and tedious process. So, I decided nope, no Forest Hills Plus2. '<img'>

A few weeks ago while going through my backup discs, I have found what I believe is a later copy, looks like about 90% with most bunch of the minimaps done. '<img'>

To make a short story that got really long shorter... would you be interested in it's completion? Or in my absence, has a five year old project become an irrelevent dinosaur?

It's hard to tell without seeing it (at least some screenies). I'd be curious to take a look at it myself (finished or not). Can't you upload it somewhere, and see what's the feedback on it? You could decide then if it's worth working on it or not.

Thanks for the offer in any case =)

Untfortunately, I'm not a person who releases incomplete work. But, you could check out the original FHP to get a basic idea. nwvault.ign.com/View.php

Uncompressed, the original  was 35 megs. You would be looking at 70-80 megs (or higher) for the new version.

Added were several varieties of tree tiles (kelsys, Kurt Wettian and some I created and/or modified), Theres a now a total of 3 types of hill terrain, Tom Banjo swamps. Features and group tiles pulled from City, Rural, Underdark, Ruins etc. So far approx 100 features and 75 groups. A number of various bridges over pit, forest and rural water. I think I added some extra Elven stuff and other bits and pieces, but it's been a long time so I don't remember.

I still have to add all the ships, galleons, caravels. Plus there's probably a lot of newer content that wasn't around back then, to add.

Another thing to add, although I once considered myself extremely well-knowledged in the tileset modification department, it has been almost five years since I have touched any tileset related projects. So if I did restart working on FHP2, it would take some time to complete.

I took a look, and I'm not interested tbh. I could be wrong, but I think this kind of "old" tilesets combo are pretty much covered ad nauseam now. Same thing but at least retextured could be interesting though, or combo of last patch tilesets could also be of use, but its just me. =)

Speaking of retexturing, I would love it if someone would update the Red Granite tileset

http://nwvault.ign.c....Detail&id=2453

I did used to love the big ol' mega-combos, but nowerdays I do tend to use the smaller stuff, or things with a unique look to them

Ahh, well, that's why I asked if it was a "dinosaur". '<img'> I've been away from NWN for quite a while. No point wasting anymore time on this then.I can put the project to rest and can now take a look at a non-tileset related idea I had in mind.  Thanks Jez, '<img'>

Peeking at the screenshots, it looks like alot is similarly covered by other haks nowadays. Releasing what you have to the CEP Team might be worth a consideration though as there's alot you did that would add to their compilation likely. This help salvage some of your old efforts as well.

Just a thought.

I say you should finish your project, offer it up, and let the masses decide.'<img'>

Of course that's only a good opinion if you were looking for a push in that direction. ''

It's true that hills of any kind have been done and re-done and... perhaps over done.  '<img'>

But, what the heck, if its something you want to do...  JUST DO IT!

Michael,  I think you're right on the overdone part.
After spending time playing with Lord of Worms' Tilesets which are absolutely amazing, I realized how old my forest haks looked. It's time to move on and that's what i'll do. As I plan on building a new PW using LoW's tiles, I may end up creating an add-on to it. That's how I got going doing tileset add-ons in the first place. ''

I do have another project that I never completed and laying around on my desktop, a customizable placeable that is so deviously simple (simple is what I do best, lol), maybe i missed it, but I haven't seen it on the Vault. I can't reveal it here, obviously.

So out with the old in with the new.'<img'>

Any chance of converting some of your original work as placeables? I for one find huge tilesets a bit intimidating and can never find precisely what I want. Placeable trees etc on the other hand might be useful. Anyway, it's just a thought.
