I'm currently replaying the Swordflight Series as a Paladin of Tyr (in anticipation for the upcoming Swordflight Chapter Three) and have just posted a short article on its alignment reactivity.

I'm still stuck at Hordes of Underdark,I know I know....but why is it so damn difficult?! The Valsharess one on one fight,and the Maugrim + many others fight,the fourth Guardian of the Path fight.....I cheated through all of them,still I wish I wouldn't have to...I found this one just impossible,I've already set the difficulty to "easy". BTW I'm a Sorcerer(16) and Monk(11).




 


I remember most of HOTU being quite easy, in large part because of all the over-powered gear, but I can be a bit of a "powergamer." Certainly the fight against Grimgnaw & co. can be quite difficult if you go in unprepared for something that intense (and you probably would be unprepared, since it is not like much of anything else in that module is at all comparable in difficulty).


 


At any rate, your build certainly does seem to be less than ideal. Among other things, having only 16 Sorcerer levels means you cannot cast 9th level spells, and are thus missing out on over-powered stuff like Time Stop and Maximized Isaac's Greater Missile Storms.


 


Also pay attention to what gear you are equipping. It is generally a good idea to max out your Armor with an item boosting it in every slot that gives a bonus to a unique type of Armor (since aside from Dodge they do not stack): Amulet for Natural AC, Boots for Dodge AC, Armor itself or Bracers for standard Armor, Deflection on ring, cloak, or most anything else, Shield...well, irrelevant in the case of your classes. With monk, furthermore, boosting both Dexterity and Wisdom (with item, spell, potion, or combination thereof) also increases AC. Playing a caster, you will want to avoid going into battle without first casting whatever buffing spells you have (In particular, Displacement or Improved Invisibility for Concealment can enormously increase your survivability). Also, once past the beginning of most modules you should have enough gold to purchase dozens of Heal potions. Have you done so? Just about to restart Dark Energy.  The game crashed first time round, although I don't think I was playing with the right mindset.  So I replayed A Dance with Rogues and Honour Amongst Thieves to think sneaky.


 


What I thoroughly like about Dark Energy is its feel, more fey and faerie than elf in tone, ie more Tennyson than Malory using King Arthur as a metaphor.

Yesterday, I just finished GOAT - Gathering of Assassins & Thieves. It was released on September 19, 2002 without the support/requirement of SoU or HotU.


 


In short, if you accept all the quests and follow them to the letter, then it's possible to complete the game. However, if you deviate from the instructions and achieve the goals through an alternate method, the plot breaks and you can't complete the game.


 


I do not recommend this module because of IMHO poor design. I'm leaving aside any comment on it's technical merits because it was built on a very much older version of NWN and without either of the expansions.


 


From a design perspective:


 


  1. The author failed to account for alternate methods of achieving the stated goal for the final quest (as mentioned above) which literally breaks the game and prevents completion. This is because the PC is supposed to allow themselves to be railroaded into particular situations and denied any agency at all.

  2.    
  3. In spite of being a game for Rogues, there is no way to purchase traps or Thieves' tools. There are a few traps which can be retrieved but not nearly enough to be used effectively by the PC.

  4.    
  5. In the ReadMe and IIRC the PC's handler encourage the player to avoid combat and pick pockets frequently. However very, very few targets have anything at all to pick-pocket. Likewise there are many situations where hand-to-hand combat is unavoidable.

  6.    
  7. By 2002, D&D had been around for 28 years and plenty have been written about good and bad adventure design during that time. I know this personally as I've been playing D&D since 1977 and a DM since '78. Consequently, IMHO such poor game design is thoughtless and amateurish.

Just finished Infernal Crown series.  After playing the entertaining Dark Energy module, IC started on a real low.  The biggest problem for me was that it was ridiculously difficult at first, meaning there was only one option to any fight, which meant boring.  However, it did improve as the series progressed, and enjoyed it by the end.


 


There were faults in the series...portal stones not working, having to be invisible during some side quest conversations etc.  Further, it was obvious that I missed at least one quest, since I could sell a certain lady's gear.  This was almost certainly part of a quest I could not find the start for.


 


You can complete the series without cheating, but you will need to save a lot.  An item with Haste would have made this series more enjoyable imho.

Not currently playing a module but I'm preparing a huge NWN SoU & HotU playthrough, followed by a good sampling of modules I put together in a list that I never got around to playing, like the Swordflight series and Shadewood.  Just trying to find the right visual enhancement/UI mods.  My best memories ever of RPGs were with NWN modules, but it's been years since I played one.

Really looking forward to Dark Energy when it's out of beta.  Proleric's NWN mods introduced me to things I'd never seen in RPGs before, like his nonchalant, sensitive treatment of alternative sexualities years before any of the major developers did it.

I do too look for Dark Energy "final" release. Maybe continuations to Swordflight and Almraiven - 2 modules I keep hearing about, but I would like to play them in one go, I hate cliffhangers '<img'>


 


I have been playing Another Form of Evil recently - it is sci-fi (earth future) setting paying a visit to fantasy D&D world. Sounds pretty exciting and is for a while.


I'm probably not going to complete it due to complete lack of journal entries, some bugs and general size and blandness of areas (some are superb, but they are outweighed by "meh" ones).


It might have been good to play it with a DM-ed party though. Maybe introduce some more CC etc.


 


I have decided to give NWN a rest for a while, maybe finish my studies, play other games, finish some lists/QA etc.

Having played almost every high rated module, I was suprised to discover these recently. In chapter 2 with Rogue/Paladin/Ranger.


 


The alignment touchiness is a bit over the top, but this is the first actual Lawful Good Rogue I have played as a result, as you really can't steal in this module.


 


Very good attention to detail, and nice unique class quests.

Hi SnowDog. Swordflight Chapter Three is roughly slated for a late-July release, FYI (subject to revision by Rogueknight at any time, of course). This one is highly anticipated by a lot of ppl!


 


Btw, I have posted a write-up for Servilan's Cormyrean Nights, if anyone's interested. There is a slideshow on my blog (top of right sidebar) with lots of pretty pics that may motivate ppl to play NWN modules, too!

It is awesome that someone is still developing new Modules after all this time.


 


I don't remember much about it right now (I have played so many Modules), but I do remember that Cormyrean Nights was Excellent. In my top 10 of favorites.


 


If I was thinking ahead I should have made a journal of reviews. I did review the ones I like on the old IGN Vault, but then IGN pulled that plug.
