Quick saving throw mechanics question
« on: April 25, 2014, 10:58:21 am »

[EDIT: Nevermind. I saw my math error right after posting.]

I have a feeling I am missing something simple here, but here goes...

Let's say I spawn a standard Drider Chief, ResRef: x2_drider005. Feel free to look him up: This is the 4th creature with that name in the Aberations list in the Toolset's standard creature palette.

Stats that seem relevant: He has 6 levels of aberration (primary save: will) and 20 levels of sorcerer (primary save: will). He has WIS 16 and CON 16. He has the Great Fortitude feat (and no other saving throw feats that I am seeing right away). He has INT 15 and 20 ranks of spellcraft, for total spellcraft skill level of 22.

I cast Fear at him. The combat log says that his will save was +24. This makes total sense: +5 (pre-epic drider class) +9 (pre-epic sorcerer class) +3 (epic levels) + 3 (WIS modifier) + 4 (spellcraft) = +24.

I cast Finger of Death at him. The combat log says that his fort save versus death was +18. That's not what I am expecting: +2 (pre-epic drider class) +4 (pre-epic sorcerer class) +3 (epic levels) + 3 (CON modifier) + 4 (spellcraft) +2 (Great Fortitude) = +16 +18. What am I missing here? Why is his fort save +18 rather than +16?

(BTW, the drider chief has cast no buffs on himself.)

Sorry for the long post, as this is likely a simple thing. But, I want to give enough relevant info to answer. Any ideas?

Err, it looks like you're only missing your abacus.

2+4+3+3+4+2 = 18.

Puddikoma, thanks. I saw that right after posting. Sadly, I wasn't able to edit my post before you replied. <sigh>

haha, we all do that sometimes though. It's been a long time since I played, but I believe there is a console command that allows you to show very detailed combat logs which show all the different numbers added into the total for things like attack rolls, and maybe saving throws too. That might be helpful.

I use dm_enablecombatdebugging 1 quite frequently, if that's what you are referencing. But, while it is quite helpful for physical combat mechanics, it doesn't really give much extra detail about saving throws, skill checks, etc.
