Looking for Tools
« on: October 23, 2013, 05:53:09 pm »

I've been playing (for a long time) the Baldur's Gate series and using mods by TeamBG that you can change the actual game with. Longtime part-time modder for NWN too and now I'm looking for a way to mod the base game, not using haks or overrides. Are there any tools available to mod the base game or its datafiles and put them back into the game?

Thanks! '<img'>

Perhaps you could clarify what exactly you're wanting to mod?

95% of the time you're better off using the toolset or hak files.

4.99% of the time you're better off using a tool like NWNX.

0.01% of the time you'd be better off trying to mod the base game.

If you need tools for this, I'm with MM. If you can modify the base game on your own, just do it. If you can't, there are many many tools available that let you do what you like want to do already without modifying the executable.

Lastly, if you want that much control, why use NWN at all?

I saw the community '1.70 patch' and how it added to the game without hak'ing or overriding. I'm setting up a small private network for some friends and just remember the headaches packing and unpacking haks were and distributing them to everyone, and figuring it would be easier to patch the base files.

Should be pretty simple to just email the haks to your friends.  I promise you it is much simpler to do than attempt to patch the base game files.  A decent chunk of the patch also involved stuff that can be fixed easily in the toolset via changing blueprints or scripts as well.
