Why haven't anyone done a game like NWN since?

I have many many thoughts on the topic. I will try to highlight some of them now.

Almost all modern games forget about the players that want to run games, and build ideas. Now is the time to bring that back.

The 3d action bar role playing game is great and is the standard that should remain. Multiple cameras, even locked cameras for isometric games should be possible.

In this age of massive multiplayer the game server should be capable of hosting hundreds of players. While modules may not be built with this in mind, the server software should be capable of doing it.

Standard rulesets should be developed, reviewed and reiterated by the community.

The art standards should be set by the community, forums and websites is great for this.

Multiple forms of combat should be allowed, both real time and turn based, tactical and other forms.

modern scripting with randomization and procedural generation.

The game engine and server should be capable of near perfect recreations of games such as

NWN1 and 2

Dragon Age 2

kotor 1& 1

world of warcraft mass effect

baulders gate

Planescape: torment

using turn based company even games like pokemon and xcom

Of course creating these in the game would take hours of writing scripted events, editing

UI could ( I am uncertain here) use html and css to create an interface quickly.

How would this be built? The community of course.

I suspect that many many people would be interested in a game such as this one.  I think that the community could built it with the right management and vision behind it.

I would love NWN3 in first person perspective done by Bethesda.  BioWare is too much EA to do it right. IMHO, NWN1 was more solid & better than 2, except D&D3.5 ruleset rocks.

Maybe this is what Bethesda is doing with their 3 new games ;-) ?

Also, if all else fails, I recommend roll20.com

Oh, and make it editable in VR for DMs. And playable in VR :-).

OK I'll put down the pipe now.

Really long thread - that I am just jumping it. But I always thought a "Star Wars" version of NWN would make money hand over fist.

KOTOR doesn't offer multiplayer or such moddability, though.

Neverwinter Nights forever! I recently tried the free-to-play Neverwinter because I heard you could have access to all content and not have them try to milk you of every penny you own.  Um, no.  You have access to all the QUESTS but not the content.  You have a choice of exactly two lousy generic characters if you don't want to reach deep into your pockets.  As soon as I discovered them trying to get money from me in the very first screen when I tried to select a drow, I said, "Bye, bye, boys!"  They can kiss my black drow ass.  This led to me immediately going back to NWN because- well, it's home.  Home, sweet, home... free and clear, with emphasis on FREE once you buy the base game(s).

While Neverwinter Online is indeed far inferior, in the interest of fairness what you said about races/characters it not true at all. The non-free races are dragonborn, one elven subrace, and "renegade drow". Regular drow are free. All of their classes (eight I think) are free.

I must have selected "renegade drow" then and immediately got the "Buy Now!" screen, which almost caused me to ragequit.  I finally did chuck it when I saw the starting/training area and it just felt so empty.  Made me yearn for Dark Souls II.

Checked out Neverwinter Nights hacked Master Server (NWNCX) and noticed too little activity, alas.  Neversummer  (used to play on there a lot) had zero players online.  It was such a cold, empty feeling roaming those deserted streets and avenues.  The one really popular server with 100+ players was labeled as "Adult Only" content, and decided not to log-in for fear of seeing a bunch of furries doing the nasty in public orgies or something.

Any decent persistent worlds out there with some traffic to help me get back into the swing of things after having been away for so many years?

You did check the rpg section? Action servers have seen a more drastic hit in recent years than the role playing ones. There's a good half dozen to dozen rpg servers whose player numbers have remained stable over time.
