NWN1: Weird behaviour in multiplayer
« on: May 20, 2013, 01:40:32 pm »

               Hi All,

My friend and I are experiencing some incredibly weird behaviour and was wondering if anyone has seen this before:

I bought NWN from GOG.com to play over a VPN with a friend in a different country.

We started Shadows of Undrentide, and everything was going well for a few levels.

Then we hit lvl 3, and my friend who plays a Wizard, tried levelling up, but after he levelled up his spell book was empty. So he logged out but then could not log back in because it said he took Endurance twice and spells cant be twice in a spell book. So he couldnt play that char anymore.

So in order to not lose time, he created a new char and I used the console to give him XP to get to my level.

But ever since then when we try play together he can't see my char move, he says it seems as if it is lag, as I will be "moonwalking" in one spot and then teleport to a different spot.

It is not lag, because if we start two new chars it works fine. I also disabled the setting in the Server which forced legal chars. Still no luck.

Has anyone ever experience this behaviour? We are at our wits end?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!!

The OC, SoU, and HotU are terrible for multiplayer. They are designed for a single player, one who does all the conversations with the NPCs.

Your better off playing a mod from the vault that is set up for multi-play, there are hundreds of them out there.

As to the problems you described, it is lag. Lag from the internet connection for your friend to your server, and possibly your playing on the server machine as well as hosting it.

I've never heard of this happening - ever.  One way to get around this might be to make sure you do NOT have "Enforce Legal Characters" enabled.

They're fine for multiplayer - hell, you can see parts in the OC where it was explicitly designed for MP.  The only problems you might have are some of the cutscenes/sequences in HotU, but even then that's generally fine.

Even "multiplayer" campaigns usually have a single player do all the conversations with the NPCs, not sure why you mentioned that.

I agree with the suggestions which others have given, but there is another possible cause.  If you're both using the same settings and the VPN makes it look like you're both on the same IP address, the server may be becoming confused over which player is which.

Edit the nwnplayer.ini file.  Find the line Client Port=5120.  For one player, change the number (I suggest to 5121).  Save the file and exit.

This is a problem common to all nwn servers.  It happens whenever two or more players log in to the same server using the same client port number, using the same IP address.  Somehow, the server can't tell which player is which.  If you make sure the client port is different for each player, that permanently solves the problem.

Even if this isn't the problem, it won't hurt to try it.

Thanks for all the replies, we both re-installed the game and for some reason it works now.

We lvl 7 and in Chapter 2 of SoU.

I find the OC, SOU and Hordes fine for Multiplayer, we have done them about 5 times each. I especially love Hordes.

The only part that gets boring is finding the Waterdavian creatures lol I don't like OC Chapter 1.
