Damage Bonus of same type when one is variable?
« on: September 06, 2012, 05:36:53 pm »

So damage bonuses of the same type do not stack, but how is that handled when one of them is variable (e.g. 2d8)?

The specific situation I have on a PW is this - I have a Scimitar (base damage slashing) eith EB +10 and also received +2d8 slashing from a quest.  The +10 from the weapon EB is considered a slashing damage bonus +10.  I know two types don't stack, but does the 2d8 get rolled and if it's higher than 10 then that's used? or is just the +10 used?  The character sheet only shows +10 slashing and no variable, but we all know the character sheet lies.

I also have the ability to pay for a +20 slashing damage bonus, but in this situation, it would really only provide 10 more damage (since it wouldn't stack withe the +10 EB from the scimitar) than what I have now, correct?

Also, for the weapons that have dual damage types e.g. piercing-slashing for halberds or bludgeoning-piercing for morningstars, does that mean since the base is both types of damage, that adding either type of damage bonus is not worth it?

thanks in advance,

D

each damage value has an "average" defined in 2DA, i dont know what is this value for 2d8 exactly, but if its lower than 10 which i would guess it is, then EB is used, if it would be higher, 2d8 would be used

I also have the ability to pay for a +20 slashing damage bonus, but in this situation, it would really only provide 10 more damage (since it wouldn't stack withe the +10 EB from the scimitar) than what I have now, correct?

correct

not really sure but i would guess that EB stacks with any of those damages, yet not both

Using a longsword, +7 with +9 slashing damage, the combat log showed +9 damage, confirming what ShaDoOoW said.

I tested the last issue using two morningstars with the same damage bonuses and different enhancement bonuses. Both had +7 bludgeoning and +9 piercing. The first also had +10 EB whereas the second had +3 EB.

All three bonuses appeared on the character sheet. The combat debugging log showed +17 effect bonus for the first weapon and +16 effect bonus for the second. So, it appears to have chosen the EB and lower of the two damage bonuses for the first weapon. No idea why it ignored the higher damage bonus. With the second weapon, the game chose the two damage bonuses and ignored the damage effect from the EB.

BTW, the target creature had 25% immunity to bludgeoning, but in neither case was the damage reduced. As I think as expected, the bludgeoning damage was converted to the base damage type (bludgeoning-piercing) before immunity was applied.
