Will premium modules EVER become available offline?
« on: June 02, 2012, 08:16:01 pm »

Well, now that Premium Modules are available to everyone, maybe we could get an offline version already?
I mean, I really hate being dependant on the server to play something offline. Especially when I am away with my laptop and without Internet connection.

Couldn't they (Atari or BioWare, whoever is responsible for it at the moment) just create some patch for NWN that would eliminate the need of online authentication or maybe just release these modules without it?

Unless they are planning to repair the authentication... so that once again most of NWN players won't be able to play Premium at all. ':pinched:' But if they're not, and I really HOPE they're not, why not make it offline?

Not to throw a wet blanket on the idea, but I kinda doubt it. I mean, you acknowledge that the powers that be aren't willing to put in whatever money and effort would be needed redeploy the server that restricts premium modules to paid purchasers. (And, that would at least potentially justify allowing online sales of the premium modules. Any idea has a better chance of getting approved if a business case can be made for it.) So, if that is already too much work, I doubt that the idea of putting up the money and effort required to release a patch to satisfy offline players who mostly haven't bought the premium modules anyway is really going to get much consideration.

[BTW, people often lose sight of how much effort actually goes into putting together a release-worthy patch for a commercial product. On top of actually coding the fix for the problem the patch is nominally supposed to solve (and fighting off all of the inevitable "as long as you're fixing that, why not fix the little bug where..." requests), that code has to be alpha tested internally to discover the 90% of easy-to-catch bugs that it inadvertently introduced, then beta tested  to catch the other 90% of new bugs introduced, then it must be packaged in a way so that people who routinely burn their owner's manuals to heat cans of soup can install the patch without accidentally deleting the OS from their computers, then train customer support to deal with the people who can't get it installed properly anyway, and finally release the patch. And even that's not everything. I know a company that worked for months on a patch for its recently released game, created a patch that addressed most of the issues (none were show-stoppers anyway) and had it beta tested and pretty much ready to go (I was a beta tester). They never released it because it caused issues with some of the foreign language versions of the software and (one assumes) they were contractually obligated to provide any upgrades/updates for all released editions. I'm not saying the same constraints apply here, but with all of the complicated arrangements between Bioware, Atari, Hasbro, etc., I would easily believe the NWN situation is even more convoluted.]

Not that I am against the idea, but I think any new NWN-related patches are an extreme long-shot at this point, particularly any patches that cater to add-ons that are essentially freebies now.

premium mods should still be made today... if they can revive baldur's gate, and even make new material for the old infinity engine, imagine what they could have done with NWN and all it's cc makers, many of whom continue to produce stuff.

NWN was made by Bioware and published by Atari, but after that, Bioware was bought by EA. EA has no motive to make upgrades for this Atari game.

Well, I guess it would be some effort to release such a patch, but on the other hand...
what will happen if NWN server gets shut down completely? Unfortunately, it's quite possible, it has already given up authentication and generally NWN as a game has less and less support.

If the server shuts down completely, some community servers might launch and multiplayer will still be possible, although much weakened.
However, what about premium modules? If EA or whoever is responsible for it, cause I got lost, doesn't do anything about Premium, they will just be lost forever, since there will be no more server to connect.

I know I might sound very pessimistic, but again, it's quite likely to happen. Maybe sooner, maybe later, but it will.

Edit: But frankly, I would guess it's not THAT difficult to get rid of online authentication in the modules. After all, they did it with three of them in Diamond Edition and they pretty much didn't have to.

Well, you could decrypt them yourself and convert them to normal modules. Just requires some knowledge of x86 assembly, debuggers, and the module file format.

Proof that it's possible, I've decrypted PotSC. Plays perfectly offline. Only thing is, it shows up in "other modules" instead of premium:

But you're on your own if you plan on trying to do this yourself. I'd rather not get myself in trouble telling people how to defeat the encryption on the modules(and hope I don't for showing that it's possible. I've only done it for personal offline use, and have no plans to distribute).

Wow... just wow. I didn't think anyone has decrypted one of those. Too bad you are not going to share the method or distribute, but i absolutely understand it. I won't be able to decrypt anything myself, that's one thing I know, but now that I know some people can do it, I don't worry that much about it anymore.

Of course, I'd still love to be able to play them offline, but maybe sooner or later someone decides to put decrypted premium modules somewhere and that will do. I guess I'll just have to wait for now...

I absolutely love "Pirates of the Decrypted Coast" by the way, haha

It is best just left unsaid.

               Why?

Edit: By the way, I know it's probably too simple to work, but would premium modules work when setting NWN to connect to some emulated master server, localhost for example?
