Paladin and champion of torm ?
« on: April 28, 2012, 08:46:28 pm »

Is it bether to go heavy on paladin in a champion of torm build or not ?. Holy sword do stack with divine wrath ?

This is going to be a character for the OC + HoU so I know that everything would work but I like to do efficient build :-)

Do you mean SoU + HotU or OC + HotU? The former follows more along the game's intended story. And, SoU has some paladin-only stuff that the OC doesn't.

To your question, it's tough to answer because we aren't sure what you are comparing to. That is, are you comparing a Paladin+CoT build against a Fighter+CoT build or a Cleric+CoT build or a Bard+RDD+CoT build or what? Also, it's pretty well accepted that what you mentioned is true: almost any build will go all the way through the BW campaigns without much trouble. So, the better build will depend somewhat on what besides survivability you are going for. General combat prowess? Versatility?

Some general notes:

Holy Sword is a good spell and I think the effects stack with your other abilities. But, you will have to take quite a few levels to get Holy Sword as a paladin spell (and you will need WIS of 14+). For spoilery reasons, high Paldin levels are not quite as important in this regard if you go through SoU.

Charisma-based paladin and CoT builds can be very effective (and there are plenty of CHA-boosting items in HotU, and STR-boosting items for more traditional combat prowess), but much of the benefit is lost against non-evil creatures (e.g. constructs).

The alignment requirements on Paladin are not hard to meet in the BW campaigns. Though there are a couple places where they are a disadvantage.

There are lots of good build ideas on the epic build search engine. Beware that HotU will not likely take you past level 26-28, so any build that is a late bloomer will not be as much fun to play as it may sound. You should mention if you are planning to continue with the same character into other modules, like the Sands of Fate series - that start where HotU leaves off and reach level 40. And, I'm sure folks here will pipe up with advice, particularly if you can be a little more specific about your goals. Also, you may want to check out the NWN epic character builder's guild, where such builds are discussed and there are forums specifically for pre-level-40 builds.

first 10 levels of CoT are most advantaging. Druid can take CoT for wisdom boost to quality for dragon shape and paladin can take great smites upon every second torm level but it must be at epic levels.

More than 10 CoT is usually to no gain as his divine wrath stacks with anything (up to +20ab cap) but is short and only once per day which makes it quite unusable as even when you can rest after each encounter its boring to do so.

But you are probably playing OC where you gain epic levels only in HotU and thats on the game's end. In such environment, CoT is only waste as paladin gives you longer spells and more spell slots.

Was planing to play it trough all 3 campaing (OC,SoU and HoU) IMll probably try the Sand of Fate series after but since I,m not sure about it I'd like a build that I could enjoy late 10's/low 20's.

I might try to the old Divine Warrior epic build bioware released back in the days (8fighter/6pal/26CoT) or some personal build with 14 levels of paladin just tog et the lvl4 spells.

I think that I,ll end with a cha based build. 2Fighter lvl (for weapon spec) 15-16 paladin lvl and rest in champion of thorn (basicaly for the higher saves over going for more paladin levels).

I still can't decide if I go with a starting wiz of 14 or 16. Going with 16wisdom would give me 2x lvl3 paladin spell by lvl 14 instead of just 1.

I would only pick up champion of thorns levels after I've reached lvl15pal but I'm willing to take any advice.

these two wisdom points cost 4points which can give you lvl*2 hitpoints instead one more spell

btw you cant get specialization with only two fighter levels, you need at least four so you must do it this way:

- 3 fighter levels anytime pre-epic, don't forget to take focus on your favorite weapon
- 16 paladin levels anytime pre-epic, (consider extend spell)
- 1 torm level pre-epic for fort boost
after lvl 20
- at lvl 21 take torm level and choose epic weapon focus as torm bonus feat at lvl 21
- 22,23 - torm
- at lvl 24 take final fighter and choose specialization and epic weapon specialization
- continue as torm and take what you like

You are supposed to use one character in the OC, and another in SoU and HotU. However, I have been told that if you play SoU, then the OC, and then HotU, it doesn't break things too badly, but it isn't ideal. And yes, Sands of Fate is great for taking your post-HotU character all the way to level 40.

Also, although you need 4 Fighter levels to get Weapon Spec, you can then get Epic Weapon Spec. with CoT.

One time, I played a Paladin through SoU, HotU, and SoF so I could use the Holy Avenger, but I wound up using a certain talking longsword instead, so I didn't need to have been a Paladin after all.

yes

first, taking more than 1 torm pre-epic take you the advantage to select epic feats on his bonus feat at second class level
second, saves are calculated by class only pre-epic similar to BAB, after then they are calculated the same for all classes see nwnwiki for more details about saving throws
