Record NWN Gaming for FREE!
« on: June 24, 2011, 06:53:51 am »

               Hi folks,

Just thought I'd let you know about this Free Game Recording Software I found and tested that
works quite well, give you plenty of control over your recording like Size, Codec, FPS, etc...

As an example, I recorded This Video in "AVI No Compression mode", Edited it with VirtualDub
and converted it with my "ATI Video Converter" to .MP4

You can check it out here, It's called Gregion and it also comes with a Video Converter though
I don't use that one in particular myself to convert my videos. It is said to not contain any spyware,
adware nor malware. As it stands, I give it a 5/5 at the moment as I haven't time to fully experiment
with it.

               Thanks.

Still...is this better than Xfire? It actually looks that way. At least your recording doesn't lag. However that could depend on my computer.

Also...can you record sound from your own mic into it as well? Cause Xfire only records sound from the game and your system at most. At least as far as I know.

Hmm...looks like you are using a separate soundrecording. That kind of feels like it is complicating stuff.....maybe just better tog get Fraps.

You can choose the Audio source you wish to record. i.e. I have a Creative Audigy sound card and
I have in my sound control panel an option called "What you hear" which means all sound from all/any
connection on my sound card.

So yeah, you could record "Microphone" input at the same time of recording the game.

I'm not sure really...cause Xfire also has the setting "What you hear" but it still doesn't record the mic. At least not my mic...and at least not at the same time as all the other sources.

I'd like it to record all system sounds, game sounds, mic....the works....

Well I just tried it and confirm that it works.

I took all the steps I needed like,

1- Unchecked "Mute" Microphone in the sound control panel
2- Turned on my mic from my headset wire control
3- Fired up Gregion and then fired up NWN, pressed the record shortcut key and voila!
4- made a short recording while talking and listened to it after, All is good and well.

I've been using FRAPS for years. It works great. Of course I had to spring for a licence to get the watermark off, but the video is a lot smoother. I have several videos uploaded to YouTube:

Hey FRAPS is great no doubt about it.

Howerver, If you want to record more then 30 seconds at a time you need to purchase it.
You do not have control over CODEC use for both Video and Audio, no choice.

Also you have no choice to convert it for YouTube when it is already compressed by whatever CODEC Fraps use or upload the original capture which Youtube will convert anyway.

With Gregion I have absolute control over the final quality in of my videos since I first record
"UnCompressed", edit my capture and finally covert it to .MP4 for YouTube.

The result is a higher image quality, more editing power and more crisp/detailed.

Recording time was never an issue before. That must be a new restriction. And codecs and video formats typically get changed during editing. It records at pretty high resolution, so the files tend to be HUGE, and the free version has some seriously ugly watermarks, so yeah. If you don't want to pay for a license the videos are of pretty limited usefulness.

The players LOVED these videos. It's a great way to keep them engaged.

               From Wikipedia source Here

"The shareware version of Fraps is identical to the registered commercial version, except for an unremovable Fraps watermark at the top of every video, and a 30 second video length limit. Screenshots are not watermarked in the free version but can only be taken in the BMP format."

If that is incorrect then... my mistake.

What's your hardware?

Set it up to capture in "Gregion (Compressed)" OR "Gregion (Loseless)"
Set to record at "30 FPS"

The settings are directly accessible from the little blue screen on the GUI of the app or
you click the silver button for "Settings" to get even more control on the settings.

Here is a 10 minutes gameplay video I create using Gregion ---> Watch Here in 1080p (Recommended)

I first recorded it with the "Gregion Lossless" setting with "44100 Khz 16bit (Stereo)" Audio setting, then
I openned it in "VirtualDub" and did my tweaks in there and saved it and finaly converted it with ATI video
converter to MP4. Final file size for 10 minutes was 944.6Mb and took 3.6 hours to upload '<img'>

Enjoy!

P.S. The process of recording, Tweaking and Converting took about 1 hour 30 minutes.
