               Just wanted to share the idea and see what you think. Comments? Good/bad? More advanced/more simple?

I was thinking to implement it on my extremely slowly (almost halted) upcoming PW.

Perhaps if someone wants to steal the idea and if you are a faster builder than me (with more time on your hands) you are free to do so.


I was thinking pretty simple here. Also I want something that is easy to script as that is not my strong side :-P

It is for the forgotten realms dieties but it can be easily adapted to any deity system.

Was thinking to have like 10-15 deity temples/shrines in total on the server. So not full FR deities here but the ones most common for the region.

The system works like this: At every temple you can pray at a statue. When you pray at the same statue that is your patron deity you get a "Lesser favor of Tyr" object (where "Tyr" can be any deity). If you are level 11+ you get a "Medium Favor of Tyr" symbol and level 21+ "Greater Favor of Tyr".

You can only own one object for a specific deity at a time. This object will when used make something appropriate to the deity happen, like a buff, cast a spell or could do even more advanced stuff like create an object or whatever is appropriate.

You can only pray at each statue once per day. (Rest is set to lets say for example every 4 in-game hours.)

So you are supposed to carry the symbol with you on adventure for example and use it when you want.


To expand a bit I even was thinking about making something happen when you pray at non-patron deity statues. It has to be lesser than the the ones from the patron deities but this means you can carry around more symbols from other deities.

A simple solution is this:

If level 1-10 then praying at an arbitrary (non opposed) deity will not grant you anything.
If level 10+ then you get a lesser favor symbol.
If level 20+ you get a medium favor.

So the favor symbols you get from an arbitrary deity statue will be lesser in power than the symbol you have from your patron deity.


Just to add some fun I was thinking about what to do when praying at statues for opposed deities. One example is to just strike down the player (without damaging him) for a couple of seconds with some scary sounds and some SFX. Probably enough so the player wont try it again :-P


Yet another thing to think about is how to choose and convert between deities. I don't want it to be too easy or to hard. Generally I would assume the player writing something in the field at PC creation but it is probably even better to make the PC choose the first time he enters the server.

Then it would a no-cost choise naturally. If he wants to change further on there has to be some penalty like losing a level for example.


So...what do you think of this idea?

Again...feel free to use it for your server. I would love playing on a server that has a similar deity system.


I know there are some deity systems on the vault but I didn't like any of them. The FR systems there concentrate on having all the deities instead of choosing appropriate effects and also they mostly just add some effects on the player without having the player do anything. Another system just adds a confusing 10% auto-ressurect on dying. Usually when I am ressurected this way I just die again because I didn't realise I was ressurected. Something similar to that would ofcourse be a cool addition to my own deity system but I don't have a good solution to it.

My idea forces the player to be somewhat active like actually praying at the temples and then using the symbols in the field.

               I did something like this in Second God War.  Where you could get buffs or a holy symbol at your temple.  The holy symbol was reserved for Clerics and Paladins of the deity.  Also you could turn in relics of opposing deities for xp and gold.  You could also spy on other PC's if you were in your temple.  You would get a message on their whereabouts if they entered an area will you were in your temple.  Player X has entered area X.  I did a portal of the gods which would teleport you to your specific deities temple.  In my current PW Orilion Nights, I still do a bit with deities.  You can get divine inetventions when you fall in battle, and some npc's will worship you or follow you around if you a high enough level and have their deity.

               Not sure about the power of the favour being determined by level, although I realise that would make it far easier to implement.  My reason being level doesn't nescessarily reflect godly devotion, Perhaps you could have temple related quests that boost reputation and hence prayer rewards, and have them lower the reputation at opposing temples (which would have the added benefit of discouraging changes in deity worshipped).  You could even introduce items that affect the power of a prayer if worn, such as different potency holy symbols (Wooden cross, silver cross etc.).
Just ideas I'm throwing out there.

               I like the idea and what about an offer to get those favors? Remember the pools of Tyr where you sell any item at almost the half of its value?

               Quillmaster, that is a thoughtworth idea that I naturally had also. The slight level dependancy can feel out of place here. I felt it would be a lot more complicated to make such a system you spoke of though. Besides, I kind of explained to myself that there can be some logic in level dependancy. Lets say your god takes more notice of you if you are higher level....

Cds13, you mean like selling the favor object to other players? Dunno...I kind of firstmost thought of this as a no-drop / no-trade item....as it is something your god granted upon you personally.

               I meant the greater your donation the greater the favor, you drop into the donation pool what you want to donate and in exchange you may get a favor. The favor would compensate the loss in revenue (i.e.50%).
The gift of your god remains yours and cannot be traded.

               Aww...totally misunderstood you there cds13, sorry.

Yeah...naturally....donations always seem to exist in churches and so on. Guess there is a capitalist up there after all :-P

               Oh yeah...however...

To change to one deity there will have to be a "donation"...only in my idea it is XP. There could be a gold donation for changing to the deity but again...more complicated than just taking some XP...

               I'm absolutely not "wasting" the time with the ideas.

After all I created this thread to get ideas and feedback.

So far however....most of the ideas laid forth....have been such that I have already considered them or just didn't like to implement them myself.

I bet anyone could get inspriration from this thread though.

               One thing I did was set up shrines to the various gods in different places.  If you pray to a diametrically opposed god you get damaged.  If not an adherent of the god and merely neutral to them nothing happens.  If it is your god you get a buff base on how much you contribute, and it lasts based on your level.  So higher level/richer PC's intrically get a longer lasting buffs.
