Just wanted to share the idea and see what you think. Comments? Good/bad? More advanced/more simple?
I was thinking to implement it on my extremely slowly (almost halted) upcoming PW.
Perhaps if someone wants to steal the idea and if you are a faster builder than me (with more time on your hands) you are free to do so.
I was thinking pretty simple here. Also I want something that is easy to script as that is not my strong side :-P
It is for the forgotten realms dieties but it can be easily adapted to any deity system.
Was thinking to have like 10-15 deity temples/shrines in total on the server. So not full FR deities here but the ones most common for the region.
The system works like this: At every temple you can pray at a statue. When you pray at the same statue that is your patron deity you get a "Lesser favor of Tyr" object (where "Tyr" can be any deity). If you are level 11+ you get a "Medium Favor of Tyr" symbol and level 21+ "Greater Favor of Tyr".
You can only own one object for a specific deity at a time. This object will when used make something appropriate to the deity happen, like a buff, cast a spell or could do even more advanced stuff like create an object or whatever is appropriate.
You can only pray at each statue once per day. (Rest is set to lets say for example every 4 in-game hours.)
So you are supposed to carry the symbol with you on adventure for example and use it when you want.
To expand a bit I even was thinking about making something happen when you pray at non-patron deity statues. It has to be lesser than the the ones from the patron deities but this means you can carry around more symbols from other deities.
A simple solution is this:
If level 1-10 then praying at an arbitrary (non opposed) deity will not grant you anything.
If level 10+ then you get a lesser favor symbol.
If level 20+ you get a medium favor.
So the favor symbols you get from an arbitrary deity statue will be lesser in power than the symbol you have from your patron deity.
Just to add some fun I was thinking about what to do when praying at statues for opposed deities. One example is to just strike down the player (without damaging him) for a couple of seconds with some scary sounds and some SFX. Probably enough so the player wont try it again :-P
Yet another thing to think about is how to choose and convert between deities. I don't want it to be too easy or to hard. Generally I would assume the player writing something in the field at PC creation but it is probably even better to make the PC choose the first time he enters the server.
Then it would a no-cost choise naturally. If he wants to change further on there has to be some penalty like losing a level for example.
So...what do you think of this idea?
Again...feel free to use it for your server. I would love playing on a server that has a similar deity system.
I know there are some deity systems on the vault but I didn't like any of them. The FR systems there concentrate on having all the deities instead of choosing appropriate effects and also they mostly just add some effects on the player without having the player do anything. Another system just adds a confusing 10% auto-ressurect on dying. Usually when I am ressurected this way I just die again because I didn't realise I was ressurected. Something similar to that would ofcourse be a cool addition to my own deity system but I don't have a good solution to it.
My idea forces the player to be somewhat active like actually praying at the temples and then using the symbols in the field.
