equipable item has "unequipable" red background ?
« on: May 03, 2011, 10:12:04 am »

This may be a silly question, but what does it mean when an item in a character's inventory has a red background, but the item is equipable (as it should be)? The background turns normal (clear) when the item is equiped, but goes back to red when it is returned to inventory.

I don't know if any of this matters, but the base item is a CEP2 (v2.3) "Bracer, Shield*". Item level restriction is turned off, but the item's required level (23) is below the character's level (33) anyway. There is a class use restriction (arcane archer), but the character has that class (as a Wiz2/Rogue8/AA23). BTW, the character has ranks in UMD, but the same thing happens when I test with an AA character with no UMD (and no classes with UMD as a skill).

Obviously, this is not a critical problem, since the item can still be equiped, but I am curious why this would happen.

Is it possible there might be an additional prop on it (like alignment, perhaps?) that is somehow not being extracted from the tlk file (per corrupt index) for the item description?  That may change the valuation for UMD but doesn't really address you second non-UMD condition. Odd. *scratches head*

Yeah, thought about that and checked the item in the Toolset. There aren't any other use restrictions on the item...

What is the size/race of your PC, the size of the item (a shield?), the module you're playing with?
I never saw any red stuff you could equip myself. It's either red or... not red.

The character is an elf (arcane archer), but the item is a bracer (it equips to the glove slot), so I don't think there is a size restriction. The module doesn't seem to matter; I can start Chapter 3 of HotU with the character and the same thing happens. (Obviously, I have added CEP to HotU.)

I wonder if this is related to the CEP baseitem type. I am just not sure why. I have other items based on other similar CEP baseitem types (e.g. a Bark Belt that uses the CEP Belt, Natural* to give a natural armor AC bonus).

I think you are on to something there, MrZork. Perhaps it's just the baseitem type combined with the restriction(s) that causes the special gliche.  Just for giggles, try creating an identical bracer but remove the restriction in that one.  That should at least rule out one of the variables whether it glows red or not. No?

It's mysteries like this that tend to cause more grey hair than should be there by natural causes.  Keep pressing the investigation to give all of the CEP-neurotic fraternity self-assurance.

Edit: The item type you called "Bracer,Shield".  Shields require a proficiency.  It is possible there is some sort of proficiency that exists while in inventory but gets ignored (perhaps, on purpose) to allow it to be equipped?  (Really clutching at straws now, sry.)

Heh.  Excellent suggestion and just what I was thinking to do when I decided to take another peak at this this afternoon. I opened the Toolset to create a version that had no item properties. Same thing happens (red in inventory, but equipable).

(The item isn't marked as plot or stolen, has no variables set, doesn't have the same tag as a script, ... basically nothing unusual other than it uses one of the CEP baseitem types.)

I came to a similar suspicion about the cause, wondering if there is a 2DA file somewhere that isn't set up properly (maybe a "feat required" flag is set, but the feat isn't specified or something). I am only passingly familiar with many of the 2DA files and the documentation isn't all that newb-friendly (though the 2da.xls file is helpful), so it may take some hunting around.

Initially, I thought this might be a pretty broad question, but if it is really likely a CEP -related issue, then it may also be worth posting on the custom content forum...
