Help with Fighter/Caster RP build
« on: March 14, 2011, 03:41:25 am »

As the title suggest I want to build a fighter/caster with a preference for melee. Alignment is evil, and should eventually be built into an epic bad guy a la Sarevok/Sauron/Darth Vader or some kind of death/infernal knight. Probably starting out as a human fighter and multiclassing to wizard or cleric, using heavy armor, a melee weapon and favoring brute force over finesse.
Imagine for example Sauron in the one LotR movies where he stands in his armor surrounded by soldiers and smashes them around with his giant mace, laughing.

My two main alternatives so far is either; the more intellectual bad guy, making up for his meager physique (starting stats like 10-13) with a bit more powerful spells to boost his fighting. Maybe a fighter/cleric with domains in evil/strength, and divine power. (.. but will he be able to compensate for his low physical..?)

The other is heavy on physical with lots of strength and some spells to top it off. Low charisma/wisdom. More some kind of infernal knight, possibly fighter/wizard with a hellhound familiar.

Im also open to other builds as long as they fit the concept.

As it is for rp purposes Im not excpecting him to be a game breaker, but I still want him to be viable. Ive read some guides and the consesus seem to be that heavy armor and spellcasting dont work so well together. All opinions on how to build this guy will be gladly recieved.

For the versatility, I can recommend starting as a Rogue, then taking another 3 lvls in Pre-Epic build. You could also take 4 lvls of Fighter to gain Weapon Spec in a weapon or two, and increase your BAB and number of attacks; rest in Wizard. Then for Epic lvls, I recommend 2 lvls of Fighter to gain Epic Weapon Spec in your weapon choices, another 4 lvls of Rogue, and the rest in Wizard.

With the high INT bonuses, the skill points will be surprisingly bountiful, and while you may not be the most powerful caster in the game, you will be able to be the spell-slinging brawler mentioned above, IMO. UMD, Tumble, Uncanny Dodge and Evasion, deadly at range or in melee, and as Evil as you wish to be.

One can also sub Druid or Cleric for spells; uncertain of Sorcerer.

               Heavy armor style? Cleric.
Otherwise I don't see how you could spell anything decent witout wasting points in those expensive still spell feats.Just some player's thoughts, no builder here.
I like playing clerics almost as spellcasters anyway.
Druids are fun for RP, especially bad ones.
Shifters, but that quickslots prolem is a true nightmare.

I agree with the cleric/fighting class alternative to avoid the need for the 4 still spell feats and maintain a fairly hefty HP level.  Divine empowerment is a classic melee combo.  Choose the max cleric spell level that you want access to, set Wis no higher than that and add all bumps to Str  and as many Grt Str epic feats as you can (& epic prowess, of course).  Depending on whether you want  to pursue the Heavy Flail (ala Sauron) or dual-wield high-crit kukris (ala Darth Vader) will determine which way to focus your build. There are just too many cleric spellsword permutations to mention here without getting MUCH more specific (for example, your ruling out finessable weaponry will automatically impose a huge AB penalty, if DWing and if that matters).

Another method might be Fighter/Blackguard/Sorc, a high-Cha build that requires all the still spell feats mentioned above. Delaying most of the sorc levels until epic levels will maximize the BAB to hit stuff.  This is more of a high AC build with high protection against enemy spellcasting with all the mantles, globes, etc. available (and True Strike '<img'>). For discussion of this option, check out this build.
