Still questin' after all these years
« on: March 01, 2011, 01:18:28 am »

So I ordered a custom built machine that arrived in October - all the bells & whistles, great graphics cards, etc..

Had to send it back last week - nothing but problems since I got it but fortunately its under warranty.

So I've got a "loaner" from a friend at work for the next couple weeks. Popped a GT240 in it and it runs ok, but not well enough to run ME2 or DA:O reliably.

So I installed ol' faithful - NWN 1, to tide me over until my "state of the art" machine returns.

Have to say, even with all of the advances in graphics quality, and admittedly great story lines and voice-acting that are out there now, I'd still chalk up NWN1 and maybe NWN2 for the best character development and itemization, not to mention re-playability due to the toolkit and active community, of any RPG I've experienced.

Re-downloaded my favorite mod, the Lord of Terror one from way back, and have been having a blast.

It just goes to show... Anyway, kudos to the developers of NWN 1 and the community for a great game.

Aye!  Its hard to ever really drop NWN.  Its one among very few games that I owned that I have played straight through for more than half a decade (and yikes, was a bit younger back then too).

Despite all the graphical eye-candies, dialogue, cinematic, and all the other kinds of flash that modern games seem to bring, the simplicity, the replayability, and the endless options provided by NWN has had me coming back over and over again.  Best of all, it can still run on a modern machine.

I got mine running at 1080p, and while the game itself is hardly as detailed as anything out there today, the game is still pleasant to look at.

I've also returned to NWN1 after a couple of years, and it feels like coming home '<3'

With the help of the stickies here and a legacy thread, I just got my NWN DE installed and running on my medium old laptop with Vista. The better graphics compared to my old desktop has given the game a new lease of life for me - I think it looks great graphically and is of a level that suits the story.

The more bells and whistles you have with newer games, the more issues you have. Or, the more expensive machine you need to handle the high end graphics.

I come back to the game every couple of years anyway, but this time around after a run through to get back in the groove, I'm going to enjoy some mods too. Still the best value game I ever bought and by a long way.

Great to hear, hope you all stick around.
I've found that exploring places with new haks has made the game endlessly interesting for me.

It's good to see you still enjoy it. It's definitely a classic, after all these years. The roleplaying opportunities is what does it for me. I simply love the online interactions.

I always keep NWN installed and still play it quite frequently. Sometimes I get the feeling we'll never get something quite like it again. Some newer RPGs are really great but don't come close to NWN in terms of replay value thanks to the incredible community. Customisation with many races and classes is also a disappointingly rare sight these days.

When ever I get a new PC one of the first games I install is NWN, as long as the OS I am using still runs it I will still be playing NWN, and most likely I would just keep an old PC around so I can still play NWN even if the new OS won't run it anymore.

I just pop in one of my old hard drives and copy & paste the whole thing over. Make a shortcut, get the paks I need to run what I like and the whole thing is up &  running in less than 60 secs.

I was away for a year due to new server, funding, DAO, and new install issues. But am glad that the game is still been evolving, as well as improving during that time.

NWN1 is still my favorite PC game, until I can get Tie Fighter to work on my Win 7 machine .  '<img'>  After all these years, people are still making tilesets, modules, CC, etc.  It's a beautiful thing.

NWN is still my favourite game. I've been playing since 2004. As long as there is still a vibrant multiplayer community, I can see it continuing for years more!

I've been with NWN since a few months after initial release - never stopped exploring to this day.

Be well. Game on.

I've seen A LOT of games come out that have 4-12 hours of offline game play and no online play, I'm sorry, but that's not even Intellectually stimulating for me...  I think NWN has captivated more players than many other games in the history of PC Gaming because it was founded on Dungeons and Dragons, and is extremely re-playable due to it's depth and the huge selection of modules you have to choose from.

I never really got into offline modules, though online NWN has always been where my heart is, because I don't like playing games alone and the quality of online modules tends to be much higher than offline modules.  (Just Saying)

To me Graphics matter the least, the game play, fun, and replay factor matter 10 X more than graphics, and you are talking to someone with a $1,500 computer & lots of games too.. =D

After a long break to start a business & continuing my studies in computers, I've decided to come back to NWN, and hopefully this time I can stick around for a while too..   '<img'>
