It's easier than it seems. Really, but I'm on a Mac, so I know nothing of the PC web world. I might sound as useless as usual here, but I just had one quick thing to say: many of these sites you mentionned advertise at the bottom of their page about the way and the software they've been made of. Probably some automaton web site (free) creator... waiting for you.

About building the site you can use Word for example.....and just "save as HTML"....no need to make something that is easy complicated.

If you don't have Word I think you can get openoffice...which is free and there you can make a webpage.

About the actual hosting of the website I would recomend you to ask your internet service provider if such a survice is delivered with your internet or if it can be bought. Otherwise ask friends if they have unused web-space through their internet provider.

As a last resort you can try any of the free web-hosting thingies out there. I don't know much about them but sites like bravenet.com have been around for a long time. They even have automated ways of constructing your web-site. Perhaps worth checking out.

About the design of the website itself try to keep it simple but put all the important information that is needed for a PW there. It would be wise to look at how NWVAULT structures its information about PW's so that you at least know some of the parts that should be on the website.

Leave some parts of the information to the forums. Especially thinking about information that is subject to change or discussion.

And as I said...don't put too much about the PW on your website as you need to have the same information inside the server itself....and this needs to be synced with the website....so....a lot of text can easily get out of hand...

Here is one example that I made myself (of a PW that is no longer running). Try to think away the big white sign on the first page (it is the information about that it is down).

Good luck!

Unfortunately, there is no "free" lunch.  '<img'>

Even those that claim to be free websites include all sorts of pop-ups and ads to intercept potential browsers.  The benefit though, is that they usually provide packaged interfaces that make the basic web design easier for a novice. The same sites will allot ad-free space for you, for a fee.

As far as your own ISP providing web space for you (the route that I would go), unless the default connection package you are paying for has already provided that space, your ISP will charge a premium to provide web space, at least all of those I've tried have.  But it's worth it, because as your needs expand your provider will be happy to accomodate your needs (again, for a price).  The only clinker is if you decide to change ISPs.... you will need to move all the content.

One aspect that seems worth mentioning is testing any content you provide/design with several different browsers. It amazes me how vastly different that some browsers interpret HTML, Java, etc. so it is always handy to see how the diverse community is viewing your presentation regardless of the interface.

Another free option you might consider is Google Sites.

www.google.com/sites/overview.html

They only placed one small txt ad at the bottom of the page I've been running there for quite a few years now.

While they don't allow a massive amount of file storage, there are plenty of other sites you can house files at and just have links to them on your page.

Regards

Karvon

Good call, Karvon. I second that suggestion. Google Sites is a good system. Not very flashy, but you won't find anything better in the same price range.

I've been building sites for a long time... so all it took was my time for ours. I'd suggest a trial version of dreamweaver or another WYSIWYG program for someone just starting out. There's also a few new site hosts (mostly for small business owners) that include a generic design as a part of the cost of hosting and names.
