Rogues are very good choices for single player due to their skills and combat abilities (though similar to WoW, having a good tank in your party will make it easier to do the best damage with your sneak attacks a la backstabbing). When splashed (combined with other classes to a lesser degree) with more combat oriented classes (Rogue is a 3/4 BAB class, meaning they are less effective at hitting targets than the so-called
Main classes). Good splashes for Rogues are Fighter (for bonus combat feats), Paladin (for fear immunity and saving throw bonuses), Champion of Torm (for saving throw bonuses without having to invest in charisma--though this bonus is combined with your item-based bonuses that are subject to a +20 cap), Ranger (for dual-wield feats), or Weapon Master (for expanded Critical Hit capabilities).
Though I almost exclusively play Arcane Archers, Rogue comes in at a close second--my current Rogue build is a 35/4/1 Rogue/Paladin/Monk that uses monk weapons (on our server this includes Nunchaku, but in vanilla NWN you would be limited to fists or kamas without modifications) to obtain the maximum number of attacks (you need 4 levels in one of the aforementioned Main classes before level 20 in order to have 4 base attacks per round, if the rest of your levels are using a 3/4 BAB class.
Since you like using Bows though, you could try a Rogue-based Arcane Archer (26/13/1 AA/Rogue/Wiz), which combines the bow-based combat prowess of the AA with the skill base and defensive abilities of a Rogue (particularly the ability to take epic dodge to avoid the first attack that would have hit you in a given round).
There is definitely a lot of material to absorb in order to get the most out of building an effective character, even offline. When you get into the online world, you may find that level of detail multiplied depending on where you play. For example, we have made a multitude of changes to both
Rogues and
Arcane Archers, but we have a great deal of resources and people to help people process all the information to get the most out of their play experience.
Welcome to the game, hope you enjoy it (especially the not having to pay any more money part of it)!
