Does NWN1 or NWN2 have a more active multiplayer base

Just curious on whether NWN1 or N2N2 has a bigger online community for multiplayer. Thanks '<img'>

NWN1 has and pretty much has always had a very active player base. Last time I was able to look at both games' stats on the gamespy site, NWN1 always had more players, more servers and more activity. Issues that, IMHO, kept NWN2 from properly inheriting the throne of NWN is that it required much better hardware, would not run on some OSs' that the original would run on, and being released ahead of an economic downturn kept many from updating their rig. There were other issues too, like the downloading a pile of material to play an online game (some ppl are picky about downloads).

My vote, NWN1 all the way.

As of right now, I don't think there are any reliable figures.  As there were, NWN consistently beat NWN2 hands-down online.

There is information on BioWare's website concerning how many are playing NWN1 at any given time--it was recently clocked at around 700 during a North American weekend night (509 as of this post). There are no similar statistics for Neverwinter Nights 2 that I can find from Obsidian, but assuming an equivalent percentage of each community would use XFire, you can correlate the level of activity in each game by checking out their (243) respective pages (7).

Yeah there are now no really reliable figures but I will make an educated guess based on different things.

I would say that numbers playing online is at least double for NWN1 compared to NWN2.

When it comes to playing  in general and offline playing I think the ratio is probably about the same.

Based primarily on statistics from Xfire but also the activity in this forum and other sources.

Personally I would even even say the ratio is more like 3 to 1 in favor of NWN1 but I would have problems backing that up....because then I would be mixing in old statistics from Gamespy that was not reliable.

Anyway...if your question was which has the most people online I think it is easily answered. NWN1 easily....still....and forever.

If we start comparing how big the communities where at the peak of their "lives" the ratio is probably more like 10 to 1 in favor of NWN1.

Don't listen to any one of them but me. I know for certain the ratio is 1000 for 1 in NWN1 favor. If not more...

The only problem I have is I can't back that up either.

Not that it really matters, does it?

Have fun!

Well finally as a statistician I can help. All you need to do is sample some servers. If you can do "Mark Recapture" one could get a really good ratio estimate. I'll work on this if people really care. Sounds fun.

Probably the worst suggestion ever.

What population a few specific servers have really says NOTHING about the total population.

No...Xfire has the best statistics...at least regarding comparing the two...

About statistics on the total...it seems only NWN1 has them on their homepage...while NWN2 has none...

Well, to do anything even remotely "accurate" that way, you would need to get the Server Admins to log activity...say, for one month.  Then you would need to gather and correlate the data into say...pie charts!  Yeah!

Everyone loves pie, right?

Pie charts? ughn. And I supose they should be 3d and done in excel as well.

Superfly: You are making a false assumption. We are discussing an estimate, not a census. The original question, paraphrased, on average what is the ratio of nwn players on line to nwn2 players. We can either assume a closed population or open, open is probably a better assumption since players come and go, but harder to model. To get an estimate we observe a set of logging stations, eg server logs, xfire, depending on the sample frame, and over time we look at players who return to the same site at each interval vs transients, and we can get an average ratio of the

nwn/nwn2 players. Incidentally the ratio is easier to estimate than the actual pool of players. Lesson over.
