Managing CD Keys, Registry
« on: September 15, 2010, 12:54:34 pm »

I just bought a new copy of NWN Deluxe (the UK DVD version), and I'm not sure how to go about making sure my new CD keys are valid. So, a bunch of questions-

Is it safe to simply replace the keys in an install's nwncdkey.ini? Would this affect the NWN registry values at all, and would I need to create a new player account for the new keys? Are the NWN registry values actually needed?

Can I register more than one CD key for NWN, SoU and HotU on the BioWare website without replacing the existing ones? I have two installs of NWN on this PC (one a duplicate of the other for modding): can I safely switch the CD keys of one install and not the other? (ie, run two installs with their own keys on a single drive.)

I realise I could find all of this out myself, but I'd rather not re-install or compromise the validity of either set of keys.

Thanks!

i can try to answer some of the questions --

1) I do not think the cd keys go into the registry. if u change them in the ini file that is all that is required.

2) i am not sure if the old bioware nwn forum website is still allowing the registration of new keys. i do not think the new forums allow it either.

3) i think i have run 2 installs of nwn on one hard drive with 2 different set of keys.

so u should be set to go hopefully '<img'>

Well I successfully registered a second CDkey on this account, so I would suggest that the registration part works and allows more than one key.

The registry I don't think is affected by which CDkey you're using, but stuff like path is going to be affected I think by which software keys are in your registry.  So one copy will work fine, the other.. I don't know.

Running two different installs from the same drive... I don't know.  The registry is likely to get confused....

i have switched my nwn directorys into various copys on my hd one for modding, other for d20, other for a ravenloft and other for the true nwn itself i have 9 nwn keys 1 for the main nwn other sou other hotu, plus 3 more from nwn deluxe and +3 for a magazine who comes with nwn platinum attached

i only have registered at bioware my 3 firsts keys the others i personally never registered and im still able to connect to any server using my acount for all my keys

so i think the nwn .reg file only store the game version(1,69)and the path for hakinstallers.

i dont think the nwn reg have some relation with cd keys and player acount...but the .reg values will be pointed to your first nwn instalation  the other nwn directory copys will point to the main installation registry too

i switched my keys directly form te .ini and always worked fine, and for my premium modules they are linked to my first key but it is nothing on my pc reg file it is directly on my cd key on bioware

so i think tis safe since i do this since 2003 without problems on my keys

sorry for my bad english its not my native language

I don't think registry is needed. You can simply copy a NWN folder onto a new computer and it works fine. (but I also have no technical knowledge of what the registry does. All I know is NWN will play fine.)  I also think player account and keys are seperate. I know I have used different keys with the same account at least.

Can I register more than one CD key for NWN, SoU and HotU on the BioWare website without replacing the existing ones? No idea, sorry. I have only one set of keys registered. Tho i wish I had tried to do more as I seem to have lost a set of keys *sigh*

I realise I could find all of this out myself, but I'd rather not re-install or compromise the validity of either set of keys.

I'd just copy and backup nwncdkey.ini and change the working one to your new keys. I wouldn't expect any problem. In fact, I installed NWN on my friends computer by copying my folder over and changing nwncdkey and the other .inis so it had her player name etc. Not quite the same case but it works fine.

Have fun '<img'>

               I love you guys.

That was extremely helpful, thanks. I successfully registered my new keys on the BioWare site as well.

Cool beans.  I'd add something, but as it's already been said, I'll just stick with the congrats.

So congrats.
