Yes it is. Unfortunately it seems that all the big gaming (at least the biggest ones) seem to concentrate solely on the huge mainstream group that is kids more or less.

I am pretty sure that there are other groups that are more like myself. Old grumpy farts that come from playing NWN or even PnP D&D. I don't think any gaming company has acknowledged this group yet.

Because the industry is big that also leaves/makes room for a bigger difference in what people want.

Lets just take this with cars. Some people want a small and economic car and some want a big luxury car. Most of the poeple however will want a medium car that is farly good priced. I think what we see today in the gaming industry is that they are concentrating totally on the middle segment and have not yet started to look at the other segments.

               That's why NWN is full of us old grumpy farts, because we want a game that requires you to think.

I find nothing intellectually stimulating about click to kill..

Though some of these click to kill games, like the First Person Shooter Battlefield2 serves a purpose, as it was designed for the U.S. military to teach people military tactics, which is significantly different in respect to stimulating one's intelligence, for it's hard to learn real combat tactics under real fire, unless your talking about learning how to crawl while an M-60 is being fired over your head, but that's not very intellectually stimulating either.. lol..

               Fyi; when I said "oc" I meant neverwinter nights as in when it was first released I'm 21 now





I agrea with  you old grumpy farts (lol), but still there are a lot of indie companies out there who seem to help keep old traditional rpgs a live.

               On the note of NWN dying off...

I've made some flyers recently and posted them at comic stores around town. There's game nights where dnd'ers gather, so it may draw interest. I hope some other dedicated players will do the same, as some of our playerbase already has.

               Why not have the best of both worlds?  Make the "mainstream" point of an adventure that caters to the "we want it now!" crowd, and then make many sidequests that are difficult, tricky, etc.  Doesn't that satisfy both crowds?



I personally think that DA:O did that well enough.



I personally think it has everything to do with rewarding playstyles, myself.  If one takes pains to create for and reward different playstyles, I think one will end up with a bigger and more varied playerbase.



This is often where I find NWN lacking.  One sees Action, RPG, etc, but rarely mixes of such, with varying challenge, tricks, etc.

I definitely know there are RP/Action/Storyline modules out there, even with PVP as an option, these modules tend to be nicer than those that aren't as diversified, however, there is one problem, and that lays with players playing modules by Type, which means that they will congregate in the area where they want to play.



E.g., if a player likes Action, they will play on Action servers, therefore, many action servers are flooded with players who are mostly interested in that, and you will rarely find, per say, a RPer there.

I think just about every setup or system will work for this game given the vast diversity of the crowd of players that are out there.  Some people like and some people dislike tough death penalties.  Some people want fast leveling and some people want slow leveling, some people want high magic and some want low magic, and so on. In my opinion, its the diversity of the players and not by consequence the diversity of the servers out there that has continued to provide unending challenges and fun to this fantastic game.
 
If a server wishes to change its rules mid-stream and you dislike such changes, don't even begin to think the door to your fun in NWN is closing because if you look to your left or right I can guarantee there is a window of opportunity standing wide open with a server beyond the glass just waiting to provide you the same or similiar entertainment factor with a HUGE bonus.  Now that you've had fun on this server that has changed, you can now make a whole new batch of friends at this next server.  
 
Change is good, all server setups are awesome.  EXPLORE your options, NEVER get hog-tied into playing a single server all the time, and you will NEVER have to worry when the "change" digs into your fun.

The only problem I see in the statements above Sharon, is, Change is Good...

That's really an opinion, as often is the case, players like to "stick" with servers & build their characters (long term). 

If we look at the case of changes like a server wipe, severe changes in rules, or the nerfing of multiple spells, then your going to not really hear much grumbling, because the players will just leave.  Too many rules & rule thumpers can spoil game play fast..

I'm not saying everyone does, but it's more common than not.

Though, you make some great other points, like the game being vastly diversified, of that, I'd say your 100% correct.

I think many servers want to provide a huge entertainment window, and essentially you nailed it correct there too.
