I played NWN back in the glory days of 3KDS moved through to Estium and did a stint on just about every server around at the time that was HCR and low magic.  Whenever I've reinstalled NWN in the past two years the playerbase has been non-existant across any roleplay servers.

I've tried and tried to figure out where the roleplayers have gone, but I'm not aware of ANY game out there that facilitates RP as well as NWN.  NWN2 didn't do it because of how impossible the PWs were to make early on, and I didn't feel like getting the other expansions for it just to log in, be disappointed by what was on offer and then log off.

My question is, where the hell are you all?!  What games came out that allowed NWN to die the death it did?  Has everyone just moved onto MMORPGs and given up storytelling altogether or is there a RP haven somewhere that I've overlooked?

I would love nothing more than for 600 active players to suddenly decide to come back to NWN and all join in some HCR FR servers but whenever I've tried reinstalling and getting back on the NWN wagon I've uninstalled less than a week later after running around emoting on empty servers to myself.

               a lot of players did go into mmorpgs i think. buuuut...



actually i found a lot more rp players this week than i expected (i just returned to nwn 1 again).

try the rp section of the gamespy servers and look for server vault servers.

a lot of the adult servers have disappeared and now there's a lot of fairly serious rpers,

also look at the PW World and PW Action categories - theres a lot of casual RP there where people just go in and explore and interact.



i dont think in depth RP is as widespread as it used to be though the servers i visited had a wortwhile playerbase (more than 30 each?).

               NWN is an old game.  It is good for RP, yes, and that's why it's retained a lot of the playerbase it still has, but it's not as good for RP as pure text or, say, a tabletop.

The most plausible solution is that the people who RPed in NWN were RPing before NWN came out, so when NWN began to feel dated for them, they kept on RPing, in chatrooms or forums or in person, but started playing different games.

As to where people have went...NWN2 has persistent worlds, and LOTRO has a lot of roleplayers, though I have no idea whether the upcoming switch to free-to-play will ruin that with a possible influx of illiterate children.

               Neverwinterconnections.com has a number of ongoing campaigns with openings advertised from time to time.  Those are more like pnp sessions though, rather than PWs for the most part.

               I think there's also a tendency for those still dedicated to NWN, to want to create their own vision of a roleplaying world, rather than play someone else's (and so increase the number of roleplayers that would be present on it). Including my own, I could name... five roleplaying worlds being developed by serious roleplayers with the skills to actually complete a high quality PW. And among ourselves we basically agreed that while we're insane, any vision but our own is too much of a compromise (even if we're likely to share players to one degree or another).

You could interpret that situation (which might be indicative of a broader situation in the community) in two different ways, I guess. On the one hand, yes, it's madness - but on the other, perhaps there's simply a lack of modules that really support the sort of roleplay that I assume the OP is talking about.

There are still roleplayers around.

Only you can help add to the #s, if there are few players playing, if you decide you don't want to RP anywhere in nwn, then you decrease that # by -1...

If you don't think NWN has any players, you would be wrong there, for there are still hundreds of players out there, as for the rest of those who left...

               They're all at the World Serpent Inn. Well, some are anyhow. Really, there's more just pocket communities now. Find one with people you like and follow the stories and plots. Sometimes it takes a little patience to get it rolling. It also helps to ask on the forums for the busy times, as all servers are different.

                As soon as I saw this thread, I heard Bonnie Tyler's epic anthem, "Holding out for a Hero" run through my mind, in which young Bonnie, aching and frustrated, searches for the heroes of old, but is unable to find them.  Don't worry, lass, I ain't dead yet!  There's one Dwarf yet who stills draw breath in the NWN multiverse.  And I plan to be the last Dwarf standing come Ragnarok, and when even I fall, I shall see you all in Valhalla where we can start fresh with 1st level guys.  WOOT!

               Well..that NWN has been loosing players over the past years is not a shock to most of us I think.



Concerning roleplay servers I think that is probably the biggest section even though a bit stale.



Unfortunately the lower population RP servers where I used to hang out have become even more low populated...



It seems the community is constantly moving up to a few of the most popular servers which are really not my favourites as they have a long history of nepotism usually.

               Well, most hosters are going to give precedence to those who play on the LAN with them rather than those who just come to visit, naturally.  Furthermore, people don't always host for the NWN community, but rather for friends & family, so nepotism is acceptable in NWN, even if you don't care for that server because of nepotism.

               Eh, some favoritism is necessary. It sort of has to happen on a certain level if you're going to ever do anything at all to help advance individual players in rp, as a dm. If no one ever gets the spotlight, it's really boring. Things like free levels/gear for doing nothing, or letting your friends cheat without concequences when all the other players would have been banned... yeah, not good. I've left servers for that version of nepotism. Ironically, it WAS one of the big rp servers.

               I meant that second type you mentioned...which is no fun at all.



Naturally it was the bigger servers that could have this....as they had players to spare.



Today the situation is different however. I don't think there is any server that gives their fanboys unlimited powers towards other players anymore...

Hi, we played together on 3kds back in ye olde days.

I went to try to troll some people after I quit 3kds, but ended up RP'ing with some of them and we currently keep a group on Skype and try to find games that we enjoy. Though I still bash my head against NWN's toolset or start a new singleplayer game every now and then, only to quit shortly after.

I think I liked these servers better when there was chaos on them and extremely unbalanced crafting systems that allowed pretty bad-ass gear to be made. At least you'd look cool.
