Harper Scout Builds?
« on: August 21, 2010, 09:39:19 pm »

Everytime I think of a build to play I always want to play a Harper Scout, but being picky I would like one with pre-epic levels.

Main issue is I want to roleplay the toon, but not have it weak in combat.  I've been spoiled by Paladin/Sorceress/Red Dragon Disciple Build.  So it makes it hard on me when building.  Most of builds I find are party designed with specializations.

Enough of my rant and raving.  What are some good combinations that use Harper Scout before Epic Levels?

               How about a Human Ranger 15/HS 5 ?  Perhaps finish up with Ranger 15/HS 5/ Cleric 20. '<img'>

Seriously... if you were a bit more specific than "not weak in combat" perhaps it would be easier and faster to piece something together.  Is this intended specifically as a pre-epic build?  Any environmental restrictions you are aware of?  Heavy on the RP aspects? Str or dex build? Sword/board or D-W? Any race preference? Nonetheless...

I'm guessing you would go one of three basic directions: ranger, bard or rogue.  You'll need plenty of pre-epic fighter-type levels to avoid the crap BAB and APR.  If you really insist on getting all 5 HS levels pre-epic you will take a bad hit for that 5th HS level.

Ranger would be my own preference, regardless of how far you intend to develop this character.  The FE combo could be very handy and the special saves last fairly long.  Cat's Grace is a wash since the Ranger version will last longer but it could be used for back-up, I suppose.

I'll leave it to the builder community to suggest other class combos since bard or rogue will do less average damage except for rogue sneaks if the foe is not immune.  Have never used HS myself although have examined its specialties.  Probably best for RP I'm guessing.

What exactly is the object of your build?

My aim to play through SoU and HotU first.  If I enjoy may concider other options.

As for Pre-Epic I like at least 4 Harper Scout Levels.  Would prefer flexibilty with stats.  Have only one skill requirement, Persuasion.  As for Race or class is debatable so long as good in combat.  Versitility is desired.

Kewl!  Wouldn't have guessed that.

How about the Harper FE feats?  Does the FE damage stack with the ranger's?

While I don't think there's a legitamately good way to use HS, a DEX based Pally/CoT/HS is at least synergistic.  Stackable Cat's, and stackable Eagles at least have some real value.

I couldn't confirm this from the wiki, but IIRC, HS FE do not stack w/ ranger FEs.  That said, this seems counter-intuitive to me, so hopefully I'm mistaken.

               Stuff to chew on...

Cinnabar Din's ECB Harper Scout Guide

a HS build like onion suggested except Str, ala Cin (couldn't find a Dex version of Pal/HS/CoT)
a HS dual-wield, also ala Cin

It appears that any a real value Harper levels can add to a build are acquired in epic levels.  Not that you couldn't just tweak a build to get the Harper RP during pre-epic, just that the build will take a beating.  But read Cin's guide (if you haven't already, that is).   It seems to infer there is no stacking between HS/Rgr FE (a shame '<img'> ) AND provides a concise outline of the Pros & Cons.

Based on what official Info sez the Harper Scout doesn't gain bonuses from Ranger FE but does stack if take same FE.  Now this could just be wishful thinking.

Will read info on HS builds again.

Here is a build I thought of Ranger/Harper Scout/Shadowdancer.  Although will need to go 8/4/8 pre-epic if I want Epic-Dodge at level 24.

.

Have you tried to take the same FE?  It can't be done.  The ranger FE disappears off the HS list.

Maybe with the PRC?  Dunno.

Yeah, epic makes the most of HS bonus feats, in general. However, I think a bard/HS could make good use of the first bonus (HS level one) by taking curse song. The problem, though, is needing two qualifying feats for HS in a bard build (which always tend to be feat-starved already). This can be alleviated by taking fighter levels, but the measly 2 skill points/level hurts in a character with the bard's wonderful skill selection.''
