These forums present a clear picture...
« on: August 14, 2010, 05:55:19 pm »

I was reading back on last post I made (about the possible fail of these forums), but after considering other's thoughts and thinking some, I've deduced that these boards will present a very clear picture for all of us at the nwn community...

This picture will be painted by the number of people that actually join these forums..

The #s will represent 2 gross interest..

1) How many builders / players there are active in the community presently.
(Not an exact count but possibly close)

2) How active the community is, e.g., how much interest is still in the game.

Of course this information could be useful to some....

I'd like to iterate that after 4 months we may clearly see the future of NWN as a whole by the activity of these boards as well, as a community...

This is all just food for thought, of course...

I know this may be in the wrong section, I'd rather you moderators move it to the proper section than lock it...
(At least give me the suggestion to where it belongs before the seed of hate grows in your heart..)

In response to someone who asked elsewhere why oh why would they close the BioWare boards and what not I thought I should post this here as I did there.

Actually it makes perfect sense from a money standpoint in their eyes. What they did was removed the 1000s upon 1000s of names from NWN History which is long and rich and put us on a Social Site so that when new folks see all these other games with Number of Topics in the 20k range while some of ours have I dont know...12 total...then new players see a dead game. It is in effect being, ahem, outsourced.

They then find the new games in hopes of more to come.

But here is the rub, if instead BioWare went the other route and did not do a NWN2 at all and used those resources to make a system where we could still do our thang so to speak then they would have a still growing vibrant community that could be number 2 behind the WoW crowd of miscreants.

I have better hope for EA to se in this old game a true money making source as yet untouched and unrealized.

               miscreants, lol...

Interesting Take TMSDude, though not really relevant to the discussion here...

I don't care really why Bioware moved the nwn community to these new boards.

Though, now that they have, we can clearly see some new things, and that's what this post is about..

Though, based upon the activity on these boards, I'd say the interest in them isn't very high, from what I've seen...

Many old posters haven't come over, even popular ones too.. (Where is Funky?)

Well Axe, The Krit, etc...did not make the transition.

Well at least we have Good Ole Fester Pot!

IMO if by "community" you define the people being active in the forums, it doesn't automatically give a clear picture about how much people are still interested in NWN, playing it or working with it. I think there are also some who only post on the Vault pages and others who stick to their own forums, guilds and websites, form their own small NWN communities. I dare say some people are very active building with NWN but they don't come here to talk about it on a regular basis.

I think it makes perfect sense to add the NWN (1&2) forums here, along with the older legacy forums. Each game has their following and while some may complain about NWN 2 being moved here rather than  elsewhere, it actually make a lot of sense when you consider that it is the same campaign setting as NWN, still based on the aurora game engine (modified to the Electron Engine), both are licensed by Atari, etc, so there is plenty of reason to include NWN 2 along with NWN 1.

As to a new beginning here, there seems to be a bit more activity in both the NWN 1&2 forums than we were getting on the BioBoards in the last few months, Some of it, I would suspect, would be beacause some folks who are ME or DA players can now, more readily and without going to another site, can look in and see what's happening with those games, and jump back to their favored forums. Add in the influx of the Warhammer fans, it's like getting an all new audience, and a chance for those who haven't bothered with Warhammer in the past, can get a good look at what goes on there as well.

What does it mean for NWN? Mostly a bit of fresh exposure. How that plays out in the long run is anybody's guess, and only time will tell...

Fresh exposure, hey, now there is a thought!!!

I still think we will see in the months ahead a serious change in activity on the boards...

I wonder if Bioware will continue to make the game available in stores...

I for one could use a couple more copies of the game, as I am seriously considering making a LAN to play the game on with friends, locally.

In a nut shell that is what I am hoping for as people who have done the DA and ME adventures are hopefully now looking for something more. I am hoping rather than us dying out we grow and someone notices that there is still a valid and rabid fan base for this game.

The meta for these forums is not making it very easy for new/revisiting players to find help, at least not directly.  They will likely be directed to the legacy Bioboards and then need to read about the close-down and follow the links that way.  Just try googling on some typical keywords like "neverwinter nights help" or "nwn help" and you will notice the social boards are no where to be found.

I wouldn't draw any conclusions about the activity comparison of similar intervals between the old and new locations.  Once the meta is revised here you may be able to analyze activity for respective periods of time.  Without some sort of provision, the new traffic will cease completely when the old boards close for good, if that is what is planned over there.

I still have a ton of players in World of Caenyr, still very active and even getting new players regularly, but of everyone in our community I believe less than  dozen or so are registered on these new Bioware forums since the NWN move. But the same, I'd say that's about how many actively used the NWN forums as well, we mainly use our own forums. So I don't know if this place is a fair representation of the support the game still has. That being said, I think the fact that these forums have been just as active on a daily basis (and not just but the same 2-3 people) as the NWN2 forums are would show Bioware that there is still a community out here that loves this game. :-)

Elvamir, that's a very solid point mate, many players only really use the forums of the Server they play on.
