Druid Animal Form Problems
« on: August 08, 2010, 06:59:21 pm »

I haven't played NWN for a few years, I decided to go with a druid this time around (I almost always go with rogue because I hate leaving anything locked/unsearched).  I haven't gotten him very far yet, but whenever I shape shift (I've only tried the panther form so far), he won't attack.  He'll perform attacks of opportunity, but whenever I click on an enemy he'll just target it and dance around while letting the enemies beat him to death without fighting back.

I'm sure I'm doing something wrong; can anyone tell me how to get my druid to quit being a pacifist in animal form?

Just tried all base animal forms with a 14Dru/4Rog in HotU with no attack issues.

To help you isolate the problem, start a different module up with the identical character (first save the character at your current level in the current module, the one that's not performing correctly).  Try some combat while shifted in the alternate module.  Results?

(I am assuming your game is already upgraded to v1.69 at this writing.)

Question(s):  Will the animal form attack when you do a forced attack?  Will it bash a chest?  Did you shift while in Parry mode?

I'll check those things out; I've been playing shadows of undrentide.  It is upgraded, I'll try bashing chests and other modules and get back to you.

Try the OC and then if it still happens, try some custom content.  If you don't have any other custom mod available, this trainer module has a monster arena to do your testing.

But it seems darn peculiar for a fully patched version of SoU. '<img'>

I can bash chests and things; forced attack is when you select attack on the radial menu, right?  That still doesn't work against enemies, I haven't tried against allies/neutral creatures yet.  At the beginning of HotU he can attack (I leveled him as a shifter at the start of the module).  I suppose it must have something to do with SoU then, but I'm not sure what.

Nah.  I would keep it the same class as the one you created before (pure druid) to be consistent in the test.  The forced attack is via the radial like you said.

Now...

I just made a level 5 druid so I could test all combat in shifted form from the start and in the opening battle inside the school, it acted just like you said... shifted form stood around staring even after using the attack command.  I used a panther in that battle.

However, once outside, the attack works just fine.  Killed rats, some goblins, without incident. I retried the panther, then the brown bear and the wolf.  All attacked just fine whether mobbed or not.  I expect the other forms would work fine as well.

Do you have the problem in any other area than the first battle?  Unless you pre-leveled like I did you would have reached level 5 out in the wilderness somewhere.

i seem to recall having read about some sort of shifting bug. try rechanging into normal form and then transforming into an animal again. i guess that was the solution (iirc the bug only occured for the first transformation. don't know if that means per session or per lvl up or whatever. some expert might have to answer that).

maybe changing the area you are in while shifted might also work, who knows.

Yup.  That fixes it.

When you first shift you get that "Obtained Item: PC Properties" entry in the combat log, but no entry about the new form.  If you rest, then shift again you will get the appropriate entry about the animal form taking place.  This happened in both the OC and SoU when I tested it at level 5.  Whether this is something that other mod builders sanitize when they create their module or not, I dunno.

It appears that the bug only occurs until the right skin gets applied and then stays for the rest of the module. I'll let an experienced scripter fill in the details of what is really happening and how it can be remedied in the code.

Anyways... you should be fine in your SoU game after resting one time.

Good luck!

Once Hip mentioned PC Properties, the gears in my head started turning. It may be that The_Krit has a fix for this. His Remove PC Properties is an override package for the official campaigns and pre-1.69 modules. In the description he stated, "This will also solve a (maybe not every) problem that some people have in being unable to attack after casting polymorph self." Perhaps it would fix this shifting problem, as well.

I've once had that issue on a custom module before. Fortunately for me, reloading a save seemed to erradicate the problem. I've only had this issue once. I've even played a full playthrough of NWN as a druid and have not had this issue. By the way, the issue occured with the v1.69 patch; my druid play through was without it. Whether there's a non-coincidential connection there is unbeknownst to me.
