NWN Crashing on Saves
« on: April 19, 2016, 02:44:00 pm »

I have come across two mods that cause NWN to crash when I save the game. Having read comments for both mods, I didn't see any reports of other people having the same issues. Also, I did not encounter any issues with some 80 other mods that I have played using the same configuration.

I tried reinstalling NWN and only installing Island Adventures - The Color of Light, but still got the problem.

I would very much appreciate any help in understanding how to diagnose what is causing the problem or, even better, some kind of work around to avoid the issue.

Looking at the Windows crash information for NWN (Exception code c0000005 - Access violation), it looks like NWN is trying to access a memory address to which it does not have rights. Makes me wonder whether the save is becoming corrupted in some way.

Mods Causing Problems...

Ronin, Kensai of Kyoto

The crashes start very early on the game. Sometimes just reloading and trying again makes it work.

Island Adventures - The Color of Light

I got quite far in this game before the crashes started occurring. The earlier chapter (The Horns of Craven) did cause any problems.

You don't say whether or not you've installed the bioware critical rebuild patch available from the vault (look at top of home page for patches link). If you got the game from GOG this is essential and cures loads of problems.

Many thanks for responding.

I thought the NWN version I provided said it, but I have applied NWNEnglish1.69HotUUpdate.exe (the critical patch) and my game is the original retail CD, rather than GOG.

The reason I mentioned it is because while the GOG version claims to be 1,69 compliant, it is in fact missing key bits. Also because people that buy it often don't realise this it has become almost second nature to ask if the patch has been applied.

Having got that out of the way, as you have applied the patch it sounds very much like you have a corrupted save game. The only way to be sure would be if you were to compress and post your savegame on something like dropbox, providing a link so that others can download and try it on their end.

I have uploaded a save game for Island Adventures - The Color of Light here.

You should be able to load the game ok, but crash when you try to save it.

Many thanks for your interest and help.

@ Surazal - I can confirm the problem. I downloaded your save (and the necessary haks from the all-in-one version). The save loads OK, but on attempting to save again, NWN crashes with the progress bar on the save screen at about 25%.

@Proleric Many thanks for testing this. So it does seem the file is corrupted - what could cause the corruption and why on only two games - any thoughts?

Have you ever played the series through without get problems on your rig?

Also, I wonder whether you would get the same problem with Ronin, Kensai of Kyoto - this happens pretty soon after saving the game a few times at the start (once I have got outside the initial building).

tyvm for loading files.  I also get crash but not all times.

I ask question:  Is save you post made b4 or after critical rebuild 169?

Reason for ask this is cuz I also get corrupt save with plain SoU b4 I do CR patch.  Then after, never any crash agin. B4 SoU crash never had any crash with OC, HotU or CC.  Not sure what all that Bioware do in CR but it fix lot of problems.

@AndrueD: Many thanks for taking the time to try this.

The critical rebuild was applied before I started the game.

Am wondering wut card Proleric use.  This nvidia nvs 315.  Also have Radeon HD intergrate on MB but not sure how to switch.  Be gud to see if ppl with AMD also see crash.

Try putting memory higher?  Maybe need more buffer than 64.  Dunno if that matter, tho.  Many time crash come from problem with render of new tilesets, walkmesh, etc.

edit: almost forget... you try disable sound in ini before load?  it sound stupid, I know, but am thinking have something to do with fitting all resource types during load.  another idea maybe to try.

@AndrueD: Many thanks for your suggestions.

Have not tried to disable sound, because it would not be an acceptable solution.

My key concern and interest is why there are only two mods (so far) out of the many I have already played on this configuration that are causing problems on the Save?

I would be very interested to know whether this issues has been encountered by other people using the same mods. Particularly with Ronin, Kensai of Kyoto, which generates the problem very early in the mod.

If other people are not experiencing the same issues when playing these mods, then I would really like to understand what I may have done that is causing these issues. The fact that Proleric had the same issue when he tried to save the game I uploaded, indicates that the save is already corrupted.

So the real question is why are the game saves getting corrupted at some point during play, how can I determine what is causing this and, most importantly, how can I avoid getting the problem?

I don't know if this is relevant, but I just noticed that for both mods an AR_ERRORLog was created and contains these entries...

Ronin, Kensai of Kyoto:

Names Differ: ori_c08_01 ori01_c08_01

Island Adventures - The Color of Light:

Names Differ: ahc_portwillliam ahc_portwilliam

Could this be of any significance?

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870.

@Surazal - I can't add much about those specific modules, I'm afraid.
