Can't get it to run smoothly...
« on: September 28, 2015, 06:07:59 pm »

I just got the game from GOG and although the game works, it doesn't run very smoothly. I am using a laptop with the following specs:

-IntelCore i5-2430M 2.4GHz

-NVIDIA GeForce GT 520M

-4GB DDR3 Memory

-Windows 7 64-bit

-NVIDIA drivers are current

I am actually unsure about my sound card, but I believe it is Realtek. PC gaming is relatively new to me, but somebody on another forum said that my laptop should be able to run this game on max settings flawlessly. No matter what I try the game seems to stutter and lag though. Turning the settings down does help a bit, but it still has the occassional stutter which makes me think it is something not optimized.

I have made the following changes:

-Changed compatibility setting to 'XP service pack 2' and also tried 'XP service pack 3'

-Run the program as admin

-Run in 256 colour mode

-Disabled Desktop Composition (read in another topic that this can help)

NVIDIA control panel changes:

-multi-display/ mixed GPU acceleration set to 'Single Display mode'

-Power management set to 'Adaptive'

-Shader Cache set to 'Off'

-Texture Filtering-Quality set to 'High Performance'

-Texture Filtering-Trilinear Optimization set to 'On'

-Thread Optimization set to 'Off'

Everything is set at default. The game is updated and I have no mods or anything that should be affecting anything, this is just the vanilla game I am trying to run here. Really hope someone can work out why I can't get it to run smoothly!

I'm not sure what your particular problem is. I do know that when (at least on the various machines I've used) NwN spawns in creatures there is often a pause of a few seconds where nothing appears to be happening. Is this what you are talking about?

Not really. It sometimes happens as you described, but not consistently. The stuttering/lagging I am talking about can sometimes occur for a split second, and other times it pauses for what seems like several seconds and then my character will either 'teleport' to the location or the game speeds up to catch up to where I should be.

Did you try setting the CPU affinity?  That sounds alot like the behavior described in the tech help.

Yea, already done that. Threaded optimization set to 'off' also forces the game to run with one CPU.

Did you run the 1.69 Critical Rebuild after installing AND, more importantly, did you install the game to C:/NeverwinterNights/NWN. If you didn't install it to that directory, uninstall the game and when you run the GOG installer click on "options" when you get to the part about where to install the game.

I did run the critical rebuild after installing... However, I did not install it straight into C:/, it is in program files. Can I change this without affecting my character and saves btw?

Edit: Does this also apply to Neverwinter Nights 2? I installed that as well to test it, and it runs surprisingly well given that this is getting stutters on my system.
