Direct connect help
« on: July 30, 2015, 04:25:03 am »

My friend and I have been trying to create a server for just the two of us to play together on. We both have copies from GOG. Couple of things:

1) I have tried direct connecting with both regular and the community NWNCX launcher, we are unable to find our servers using the browser or direct connect option

2) We have also used the nwserver.exe program to set up a dedicated server. Neither of us can connect with this option either through direct connection, however I am able to join a server that I made without issue as a test (but he cannot hop in)

3)Neither of us have requested a CD key through GOG, but as i understand it using nwserver.exe doesnt require a cd key check. Neither of us have encountered a CD key error using any of these steps, so I dont think this could be the problem, but some clarification would help

I realize this might be a really noobish question, but we've been banging our heads for too long trying to get this to work lol, it seems like a direct connect should be the simplest way but we both keep getting timed out errors.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

First silly question. Are you running over a LAN, or over the internet? If a LAN you need to change each systems Game Port to different numbers or it will cause problems.

If you are doing it over the internet are you, or your friend, able to see your server on http://www.iscandar.ch/?Type your server IP in there. See if it shows up. If you are running an internet game and it won't show up there then no one will be able to connect.

Lastly is the server running across a wireless network? If so you need to set up your router for Port Forwarding.

Thanks for the quick reply! We've been trying over the internet. I just loaded a server through nwserver.exe to check it through the site you linked, input the IP as listed in nwserver.exe, and it couldnt find it. Soooo port forwarding then (does it need to be done for both players?), I was afraid of this lol. Any good resources you know of that can help me get this set up?

Edit: Yes its through a wireless network

Yeah, here.

Look up your router information and search it down here. Then look up Neverwinter Nights.

Though all you really need to open is 5120 - 5300. It's all that I do on my server.

Alright after looking into port forwarding for my router using this guide heres what im seeing

http://portforward.c...nter_Nights.htm

"The F9K1002v5 will not allow you to forward enough ports, to run Neverwinter Nights. You should try using the DMZ portion of this router if it is available."

And heres a sample screen shot of the DMZ router page from their site http://screenshots.p...1002v5/DMZ.htm

Not entirely sure how to proceed from here

I'm no networking genius, but I'd imagine you would enable it, and then enter in the Local IP of whatever computer you are using to run the server. Like for example 192.168.1.55, or whatever that computer is.

From what I understand though DMZ opens your computer up for intrusion. Not sure about the details. Someone else would be better to explain that.

DMZ exposes your computer as if there was no router at all. For safety, make sure to take your computer out of the DMZ when you are finished playing. The less time your computer is exposed, the better.
