Random crashes ingame
« on: February 26, 2014, 03:47:18 pm »

When I was running on a win XP I had none of them, and if then it was caused by some bugged CC or happened once per week maximally.

Now, when I switched to the win7, I get these crashed quite often actually. But I also use the latest CPP where this fix was added, which might or might not be the cause too. From my observations, it happens mostly when some other player character shows up - but I play on a server with lots of CC so it might be caused by some wings or tail or any other model that character wears. But also crashed few times when there was nobody there.

Anyone else has this issues? Do you use Project Q/CPP (which both incorporated this fix) or you still running vanilla?

The computers on my LAN server use both Q - which took that fix to the extreme and removed orientation keys from ALL dummy nodes - and CPP and we get no random crashes. Three of the PCs are running Windows 8 while one runs Win 7. I assume you have NWN set up per the tutorial that Shia posted. If not you'll want to look at that first.

Also, do you get such crashes with no CC added and no CPP?

Yes Im running with administrator permissions and xp compatibility mode. I have latest audio and video drivers.

It doesnt happen always so its hard to track it, but from my observations Im sure it crashed before game renders some dynamic character such as human, not neccesarily only PCs, it crashed three times (from around fifty visits) at one specific NPC as well. This all happened on a PW so I cant check what items/appearance that creature has though.

And since its character related I checked my override and except some overriden pallettes (which I dont know where I get them) there is nothing character related, I have The Barbarians heads in patch folder but all characters and that npc as well had helmets so I suspect it must be caused by the CPP where the only change I can think of is the mentioned fix.

But its just a guess, Im now trying to find cause and thats why I wrote - informations from other peoples would help me with this.

Well, assuming it is the fix you mentioned feel free to grab the Project Q version of the fix - I used my own edited models - and try that. Its possible something got corrupted  when the fix was applied in the file you have. Also, did you compile the model. If so, try it with the model uncompiled and see what happens.

Here's a link for the Qv1.8 a_ba animation supermodels. Animation keys have been removed from each dummy node, except the rootdummy.

I wasnt playing for a long time but recently when I was playing again I got this issue again and this time so frequently that it completely ruined my gameplay in party.

I tried everything I could think of, with no results.

1. lowest graphic settings - not helped

2. older graphic drivers (maybe helped as it was crashing extremely often with nevest nvidia drivers, when I reverted to older version its no in old trails, where it crashes randomly once in a while)

3. vanilla a_ba model (so its not caused by the latest model update as I speculated above)

4. uninstall CPP (so I believe this is not caused by anything in it)

Some findings:

- I recently got a crash in a vanilla OC singleplayer when a bandit spawned to me... So its not a custom content issue,

- Also, on a PW I got crashed frequently when crafting an armor appearance. Random again, but this might suggest something?

- And crashed after unpolymorph when there is someone around. THough this could be separated issue?

Anyone have an idea or suggestion that I havent tried yet?

Have you tried rubbing a Buddha statue's tummy before playing?  '<img'>

Sorry man, I got nothing. I'm at a complete loss. I can play through some pretty high-object encounters without any crashes using the latest nVidia drivers. Have you tried running FRAPs with the game and seeing where your fps spikes occur. That might give you some clues as to what is causing crashes for you.

EDIT - Have you got "shiny water" turned on? After checking my settings, that's about the only thing I have turned off. You might also want to try different anti-aliasing settings or check the settings for the game on the GPU interface (nVidia Control Panel). I do recall having to tweak some settings there so that they matched up with what I was running in the game.

Did you by chance do the 1.69 critical rebuild before applying the 1.71 patch?

Yes but as I said, I tried to disable graphic on minimum and that didnt help. But I forgot about NVidia panel I know I set some V-Sync settings there before, maybe there is something that wil help.

Some years ago, my main computer was an overclocked to thye max XP rig. This PC seemed to do well in general, but it random crashed after playing Neverwinter an hour or two. As soon as i downgraded the cpu frequency a few hundred Mhz, the game stopped crashing. Lesson i learned was that Nwn is picky with system stability and that you could have a PC look rock solid and just fail on one specific software.

Test your CPU temps when you play (are you on the safe side ? a non overclocked cpu with insuficient cooling could make errors). Test your system memory (flacky memory chips can bring havok too). I think crashes are generally software-related but you can't rule out hardware.

It seems I solved it.

Very old NVidia drivers (266.58) and it seems to be fine. Because yesterday I found a 100% crasher - mount/unmount/put off clothing - always crashed, not to mention that unmounting itself crashed 25% times.

Anyway, that is now resolved and I hope this fix all those random crashes I had in game.

BTW, after I fixed this and game didnt crashed after unequipping after dismount anymore I noticed a weird "refresh" animation (character appear a little in air and drops on a ground) that suddenly was triggered when unequipping clothing. It seems that after dismount, the PC animations are somehow messed up. Anyone know anything about this?

Sounds like the anims aren't getting preloaded correctly. Try placing a horse model somewhere in your module that is inaccessible to the PCs. I remember reading a long time ago that this little "trick" solved issues with the horse animations. Alternatively you could try the Alternate Horse Scripts TheKrit made. They add more stability to the scripts BioWare released.

Just fyi: Those old drivers had other issues such as that when I had opened both toolset and game, both applications lagged greatly. Since I do have toolset opened always this wasn't really solution for me, plus old drivers might downgrade newer games so I decided to get a new card. GT 640 now with latest Nvidia drivers and everything works correctly.

Nah, this is standard issue. Tried both your suggestions, it seems that this is something like that anim bogus with beholder eye.
