[Linux] NWN keep crashing
« on: August 20, 2013, 04:13:36 pm »

               Hi.
I has installed nwn on my Linux laptop a couple week ago. There is nothing wrong with the video or audio, but the game keep crashing when I create my character, at the "Appearance" step. When I look at the terminal, it say:

NOTICE: SDL_WM_GrabInput(QUERY) called..
NOTICE: SDL_WM_GrabInput(OFF) called..

Is there any solution to this problem? Thanks in advance for any help provided.

I can’t help you with Linux, Rolo or one of the others will be able to. I do know that Linux has or had a memory issue with the environmental variable.  I’m not sure if that will help you or not.

This seems to be output from nwmovies. Is there any more above those two lines? If you don't have any of the nwlinux extensions by David Holland, then this might have to do with your crash, but I doubt it.
Some more specs about your system would be helpful: Graphics board, CPU, amount of memory, Linux distro. If you have an AMD/ATi GPU, I recommend trying the ATI driver version 12.04. If it is an Intel integrated graphic chip, you can try and install driconf and use it to switch the use of s3tc texture (de)compression on in the driver which by default is off.

Thanks for your reply. Currently, I'm using OpenSuse 12.3 on a Lenovo R61i laptop with 2GB RAM and Intel Graphic GM965.
Here's the full output from terminal, hope this will help:

As I wrote before: All this is output from nwmovies, it does not tell anything about your game crashing.
Where did you get your copy of NWN (Diamond edition on DVD, GoG download, original 3CD version with separate add ons, etc.)?
Are you sure you are patched up to the latest version (1.69)?

Since you have an Intel graphics chip, please try out driconf as mentioned above.

Well, I have installed NWN Diamond Edition DVD, and patched it to 1.69. I have tried driconf method, also.

I'm not sure what could be wrong because the Intel drivers tend to work ok, though not great with nwn. And since you wrote that your game crashes during chracter creation when setting the apearence, I suspected the s3tc setting to be switched off. What is in your nwn/override dir? Did you install any custom content haks? What module do you want to play - the original campaign, one of the expansions or any community made module?

Are you sure that your game is installed correct? It could be that some game resource is faulty.

It has been annoying ever since the nwn Linux client was published that there is no log and no useful error message if nwn crashes, so that troubleshooting is quite tenious. Some people with similar problems like yours said reinstalling nwn helped to solve the issues.
